David is a Hebrew male given name from the Bible . There it is the third most frequent name after Moses and Abraham, mentioned more than 1000 times and, as in the Koran, almost always designates David , the king of Israel and Judas. Its original form is Hebrew דָּוִד Dawidh'The beloved, darling (of God)', standard Hebrew Dávid , Tiberian Hebrew Dāwiḏ ; Arabic داود Dāʾūd or Dāwūd . The name comes from the West Semitic DWD . It appears in the form twti as the name of a foreigner on an Egyptian stele from around 1750 BC. Chr.

Before the 1930s, the name David was rarely given in Germany. Its popularity gradually grew in the 1970s and 80s. In 2004 he was among the ten most popular boy names.
