1. FC Cologne became the first in the 1977/78 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
For the second time after 1970/71 , only the goal difference separated the two leading teams, 1. FC Köln under Hennes Weisweiler and the title holder of the last three years: Borussia Mönchengladbach .
On the last day of the match, Borussia Mönchengladbach's simple win was not enough if 1. FC Köln, which had a goal difference ten goals better, should also win the last game. In order to catch up in the goal difference, a record victory with a goal difference higher than this would have been necessary. Gladbach won against Dortmund 12-0 on the last day of the match , which would actually have meant the hoped-for advantage. However, the Cologne team won their game against relegated St. Pauli 5-0 and saved their better goal difference in the goal. Cologne won its first championship after 1963/64 , the year the Bundesliga was founded. The Dortmund coach was Otto Rehhagel ( hereinafter referred to as Torhagel ), who was dismissed after the record defeat. A result of 12: 0 has not been achieved until today.
Cologne's top scorer Dieter Müller (together with Gerd Müller from Bayern Munich with 24 goals each) scored six goals on matchday 3 in a 7-2 win against Werder Bremen , a Bundesliga record.
Since Cologne made the double, i.e. also won the DFB Cup , Fortuna Düsseldorf was runner-up in the European Cup Winners' Cup . Borussia Mönchengladbach , Hertha BSC , VfB Stuttgart and MSV Duisburg qualified for the UEFA Cup .
By reaching 12th place in the table, FC Bayern Munich played its worst Bundesliga season ever.
The VfB Stuttgart presented with around 54,000 visitors per home game a record crowd on that until the 1998/99 season from Borussia Dortmund has been broken.
