After HC Ambrì-Piotta , which won the competition in 1998 and 1999, the ZSC Lions Zurich also won the Continental Cup for the second time in a row. Against the team from Milan , who prevailed 4-2 in the semifinals against the Slovak champions HKm Zvolen, the Zurich team lived up to their role as favorites. Coach Pekka Rautakallio's team laid the foundation for defending their title in the first third, when Petr Jaks and Gian-Marco Crameri made the preliminary decision with two goals within eleven seconds with a score of 1-1 . The best attack line of the Vipers with the Canadians Jim Hiller , Scott Beattie and Patrice Lefèbvre only managed one goal in the first third.
