The Israel Prize ( Hebrew פרס ישראל pras jisraʾel ) is the highest cultural award of the State of Israel . It is awarded once a year on the eve of Israeli Independence Day in a state ceremony in Jerusalem . The prize was founded in 1953 on the initiative of the Minister of Education, Ben-Zion Dinur , who himself was awarded the prize in 1958 and 1973.

Criticism of the award
- In 1993 there were violent reactions against the nomination of Jeschajahu Leibowitz , which led to Leibowitz rejecting the award.
- In 2004, the education and culture minister Limor Livnat rejected the decision to honor the sculptor Igael Tumarkin , first to the award committee.
- After a controversy over his interference in the Israel Prize, Prime Minister and Interim Minister of Education Benjamin Netanyahu withdrew from the jury's selection on February 13, 2015.
