In the 19th century the place consistently had between 1150 and 1550 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous decline in the population in the first half of the 20th century to the lows of just over 1,000 people in the 1930s and 1940s. The proximity to the city of Bordeaux - as a result of the significantly lower property prices in the countryside - has led to a significant increase in population over the past few decades.

economy

For centuries, Izon lived from agriculture, which also included viticulture. The wines produced here were previously mainly exported to England via the ports on the Gironde ; Today they are the appellations Bordeaux (AOC) and Bordeaux Supérieur (AOC) markets. The place itself functions to this day as a regional trade, craft and service center. Tourism also plays a certain role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).

history

No finds from prehistoric or ancient times have so far been brought to light in the municipality. The existence of a Romanesque church attests to a settlement period at the latest since the Middle Ages.

Attractions

Saint Martin Church
  • From the originally single-nave medieval parish church of Saint-Martin , the central apse and large parts of the west facade with a portal zone typical for the region with a triumphal arch scheme and a row of five-arched blind arcades on double pillars have been preserved. The nave, on the other hand, was expanded in the 1860s with the addition of two side aisles , each of which ends in a neo-Romanesque apse , which has also been supplemented . The tapered spire ( flèche ) comes from the same period. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1925 .
  • Next to the church, a 17th or 18th century fountain was set up, which formerly belonged to the Château d'Anglade .
  • The privately owned Château d'Anglade stands on the banks of the Dordogne ( 44 ° 55 ′ 55 ″  N , 0 ° 21 ′ 2 ″  W ). It was built in the 18th century by the architect Victor Louis and consists of a main building ( corps de logis ) with lower side extensions. The castle has also been recognized as a Monument Historique since 1965 .
