John Dougherty (politician, 1857)

John Dougherty (born February 25, 1857 in Iatan , Platte County , Missouri , †  August 1, 1905 in Liberty , Missouri) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1905 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In the year of his birth, John Dougherty came to Liberty with his parents, where he later attended public schools and William Jewell College . Between 1885 and 1888 he was the newspaper "Liberty Tribune" out. After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1889, he began to work in this profession in Liberty. He also served as a hometown attorney for five years and a Clay County prosecutor for six years .

Politically, Dougherty was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1896 he applied unsuccessfully within his party for the nomination for the upcoming congressional elections. In the congressional elections of 1898 he was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded Alexander Monroe Dockery on March 4, 1899 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1905 .

In 1904, John Dougherty was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he returned to practice as a lawyer. He died just five months after the end of his last legislative term on August 1, 1905 in Liberty, where he was also buried.
