The Maine-et-Loire [ mɛnelwaːʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 49. It is in the west of the country in the Region Pays de la Loire and on the rivers Maine and Loire named. The area of ​​the department essentially comprises the historical Anjou region .

geography

The Maine-et-Loire department borders on the Ille-et-Vilaine , Mayenne , Sarthe , Indre-et-Loire , Vienne , Deux-Sèvres , Vendée and Loire-Atlantique departments . The most important rivers are the Loire , which flows through the department from east to west, and the Maine , which arises from the confluence of the Sarthe and Mayenne near Angers and flows into the Loire after only 12 km.

history

As a result of the French Revolution , the department was founded by a law of December 22, 1789 under the name Mayenne-et-Loire on March 4, 1790. Since the name Maine had already established itself as the name of the common section of the river Sarthe and Mayenne , the department was renamed Maine-et-Loire on December 12, 1791 .

The department comprises the main part of the old province of Anjou and about half of the province of Saumurois .

It has belonged to the Pays de la Loire region since 1960 .

economy

The Maine-et-Loire department has numerous branches of industry, particularly information and telecommunications technology and automotive supply (over 5,000 jobs each). The city of Angers forms a growth pole “vegetable products” (highly specialized production, research and teaching), with which 15,000 jobs are connected. The city of Cholet forms a growth pole for “children” (child food, fashion, furniture, care, etc.) with 6,300 direct jobs. In general, the fashion sector is an important economic factor with 5,000 jobs in shoe production and 3,000 jobs in clothing production. The area around Saumur is strongly influenced by tourism with 75 sights and one million visitors a year.
