The Medibank International in 2009 was a tennis tournament , which is from 12 to 17 January 2009 in Sydney took place. It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on hard courts. In the same week, the Heineken Open was played in Auckland , which, like Medibank International, was part of the ATP World Tour 250 category . At the same time a women's tournament was held in Sydney .

Defending champion in the singles was Dmitri Tursunow , who failed in the first round to Richard Gasquet . In this year's final, the fourth seeded Argentine David Nalbandian prevailed against the unseeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6: 3, 6: 7 9 , 6: 2. With this, Nalbandian won the tenth of his eleven career titles in singles. In doubles, Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were last year's winners, but they did not compete again this year. The brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won in straight sets 6: 1, 7: 6 3 against Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić .

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 433,000; total financial liabilities were $ 484,750.

The qualification took place from January 10th to 12th, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
