The MercedesCup 2012 was a tennis tournament that took place from July 9th to 15th, 2012 in Stuttgart . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2012 and was played on clay court. In the same week the SkiStar Swedish Open was played in Båstad , the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport and the ATP Vegeta Croatia Open in Umag , which, like the MercedesCup, belonged to the ATP World Tour 250 category .
The defending champion in singles, Juan Carlos Ferrero , competed in the parallel tournament in Umag this year. In the final, the two top seeded Janko Tipsarević and Juan Mónaco faced each other. In his first clay court final, Tipsarević was able to prevail against Mónaco in three sets 6: 4, 5: 7, 6: 3 and thus celebrated the third title win in his career. Mónaco, however, missed his third tournament win of the current season. Jürgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner won the doubles title last year , but this time Petzschner played with a new partner. After he had withdrawn from the individual competition due to an injury, he went handicapped to his opening encounter and lost it significantly on the side of Christopher Kas . The tournament won the unseeded Jérémy Chardy and Łukasz Kubot against the fourth seeded Michal Mertiňák and André Sá . It was the first joint title for Chardy and Kubot. Mertiňák and Sá, who have been playing together since the beginning of 2012, had to accept a defeat in their fourth final this season.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round.
