Toponymy

The place first appears in 1190 as Ecclesia de Rittha , the meaning of Rittha is unknown. The name changed to Rata , Rattes early on and ultimately became the place name.

history

Ratte is on the old Roman road (now roughly the RN 78) and was part of Le Fay . It then came into the possession of the boutons . In any case, in 1556 the residents of the hamlet of Gros freed a daughter of Jean Bouton , whose carriage got stuck in the mud. As a thank you for the rescue, Jean Bouton gave the helpers seven hectares of high oak forest. This forest is still reserved for the residents of Gros for use today . In the 16th century, the rule passed to the Baume-Montrevel family , the moth of their castle is still visible east of today's church (diameter 20-30 meters). The castle was demolished in 1987, the archaeological material is in the Écomusée de la Bresse bourguignonne in Pierre-de-Bresse . In 1856 there were still three flour mills in operation, in 1988 there were 28 farms. The old school house dates from 1877.
