The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For a long time, the town of Saint-Sernin served the - now almost completely disappeared - exclusively agriculturally oriented hamlets ( hameaux ) and individual farmsteads in the area as a craft, trade and service center. There were also many fruit trees in the region, the fruits of which could be sold in the Albi and Castres markets . In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, the place was a regional economic center inhabited by wealthy citizens. Since the middle of the 20th century tourism has played a not insignificant role for the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

Statue menhir La Dame du Saint-Sernin

The history of the place is largely in the dark. The world-famous statue menhir La Dame du Saint-Sernin (now in the Musée Fenaille in Rodez ) testifies to the presence of people (hunters, shepherds) in the Neolithic . In the Middle Ages there was a castle ( château ). During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) Saint-Sernin and the neighboring village Pousthomy were in the hands of the English for several years. Probably only towards the end of the war the place was surrounded by a wall with 5 gates.

Attractions

Apse of the collegiate church
  • The existence of a late Gothic collegiate church can be traced back to the foundation of a collegiate chapter in the wealthy town by Pope Eugene IV in 1442. The single-nave Gothic building has an elaborately worked two-part portal and shows inside rib vaults resting on consoles with some figurative keystones and side chapels ; it was changed several times in the following centuries and was recognized as a Monument historique in 1930 .
  • Today's town hall ( hôtel de ville ) is a three-storey renaissance building with several cross-frame windows - formerly serving as a hospital . The upper floor is partly built in half-timbered construction. It was recognized as a Monument historique in 1897 .
  • The facades of two other houses from the 15th to 18th centuries are also classified as Monuments historiques .
  • In the square in front of the church there is an expressive monument to Victor , the wolf boy (see below).

Personalities

In the spring of 1797 an approximately 10-year-old “wolf cub” was observed in a wooded area near Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance and was given the name Victor . François Truffaut filmed the material in 1970 under the title The Wolf Boy .
