The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 36th time in 1908/09 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed and hosted by the Scottish Football Association, began on January 23, 1909 and ended with the repeat final on April 17, 1909 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . Celtic Glasgow started the competition as defending champions . In the final last year, the Bhoys prevailed with a 5-1 win over FC St. Mirren and won their fifth title after 1892 , 1899 , 1900 and 1904 . This year's final of the Scottish Cup was the third time in a row Celtic . Opponents were the Glasgow Rangers in the Old Firm derby. After 1894 , 1899 and 1904 it was the 4th final derby of the two Glasgow clubs. For Celtic it was the twelfth final appearance since the first in 1889 , the Rangers reached the final for the ninth time. After a 2: 2 in the first final game, the repeat final also ended in a draw with the result 1: 1. After the final whistle of the second game, most of the players on the field and the fans in their stands waited for extra time . According to the regulations of the SFA , however, the extension was only permitted for a second replay endgame. The players were asked to leave the field, the groundskeeper removed the corner flags. Which made it clear that the game will not start again. The spectators of the warring teams , some of them angry after a long wait , stormed the Hampden Park square. The police blocked the way to the dressing rooms of the two teams so that the players could quietly leave the stadium. The anger of the spectators then spread to the police, so fires were started with whiskey as fuel and fences were torn down. The rioters also threw knives, stones, bottles and pieces of wood that were also used as weapons. More than 100 people were injured during the riot, many of them police officers and firefighters; fifty-four policemen alone. The uprising eventually continued outside the stadium in the streets. The houses near the stadium were damaged. The uprising lasted more than two hours. The Scottish Association decided not to play the second replay final game, so the title was not awarded. The FC Queen's Park its home stadium, Hampden Park was damaged received by the Scottish Association £ 500th (Currency unknown) Celtic and the Rangers were fined £ 150 each. Declared by various Scottish football historians, it is considered to be one of the significant games in the development of the Celtic-Rangers rivalry. It went down in Scottish football history as the Riot at Hampden . Celtic won the Scottish Championship for the fifth time in a row in the league .
