Eliza Hittman , 2020 Award Winner

The jury's Grand Prize, which was awarded the Silver Bear, honors the second-best feature film in the competition after the Golden Bear at the annual Berlin Film Festival . The prize was first awarded at the seventh edition of the film festival in 1957 as a “special prize”. Untitled Silver Bears had previously been awarded. From 1961 to 1972 the award was known as the “Special Jury Prize” and from 1973 to 1998 as the “Special Jury Prize”. Since 1999 the official name has been "Grand Jury Prize". The competition jury, which is mostly composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award.

Award winners

The works of French film directors received the most awards (10 wins), followed by their colleagues from Italy (9 wins), the USA (7) and Germany (6). The Brazilian Ruy Guerra (1964 and 1978) and the Bosnian Danis Tanović (2013 and 2016) each received two awards .

Several times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winner. Film directors from German-speaking cinema were successful for the first time in 1966, when the German Peter Schamoni (closed season for foxes ) prevailed against the competition. He was followed by Ulrich Schamoni (1967 for All Years Again ), Werner Herzog (1968 for Signs of Life ), Peter Zadek (1969 for Ich bin ein Elefant, Madame ), Andreas Dresen (2002 for Half Staircase ) and Maren Ade (2009 for All Others ) .
