The Ski Jumping World Cup 1996/97 (official name: FIS Ski Jumping World Cup 1996/97 ) was one of the International Ski Federation FIS between 30 November 1996 and 23 March 1997 discharged at 17 different locations in Europe and Asia series of competitions in ski jumping . The Nordic Tournament was held for the first time this season . Originally, 26 individual competitions and one team competition were planned. An individual competition had to be canceled without replacement, so that 25 individual competitions were included in the evaluation. Primož Peterka from Slovenia won the overall standings this season , followed by Dieter Thoma from Germany and Kazuyoshi Funaki from Japan in second and third place . The ski jumping discipline was won by Dieter Thoma ahead of Primož Peterka and the Japanese Hiroya Saitō . The defending champion of this discipline, the Finn Ari-Pekka Nikkola , finished eleventh. Primož Peterka was able to secure victory in the ski flying competition ahead of the Japanese Takanobu Okabe and Kazuyoshi Funaki. The defending champion of this category, the Austrian Andreas Goldberger , took fifth place. Japan won the Nations Cup ahead of Norway and Finland, who won last year .
