The Toyota iQ (in North America: Scion iQ ) is a passenger car model by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota , which in the segment of micro-car is located. The iQ was offered in Europe from 2009 to 2014.

history

The concept vehicle of the same name , on which the three-meter-long 3 + 1-seater is based, was presented at the IAA in autumn 2007. Production of the production model began at the end of 2008 after it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008 . Sales for Europe began on January 24, 2009. Within its class, the iQ represents an alternative concept to the Toyota Aygo : It is wider, taller, heavier and more expensive than its corporate brother, but around half a meter shorter. With this format, it competes primarily with the Smart Fortwo , whereby the iQ, in contrast to this, has a front engine and thus also front-wheel drive. Production of the iQ for the European market was ended in May 2014.

In November 2010, the manufacturer announced a recall for the model, because z. B. driving over safety markings on motorways could trigger vibrations that could cause a failure of the power steering assistance of the electric power steering. In Germany, 13,609 units were affected, in Europe 70,800.

Aston Martin developed the Cygnet on the iQ platform in order to meet European guidelines for fleet consumption.

In March 2014, Toyota announced the discontinuation of the model in Europe because the iQ did not achieve the desired success.

In 2015 the production of the car was stopped. The vehicle was sold until April 4, 2016.

technology

Externally, the smallest Toyota is characterized by 15-inch alloy wheels, high-lying headlights, short overhangs and a second side window that curves towards the B-pillar and forms a visual unit with the rear window. In the interior, the omission of the glove compartment means that the passenger seat is moved further forward and provides space for a third adult behind it. There is also space for a child behind the driver. This distribution of space was also made possible by eliminating the conventional trunk. In its place there is an approximately ten centimeter wide tub, which can also be inserted with the floor upwards if necessary and, together with the foldable rear seats, creates a flat loading area.

The cockpit is defined by a silver-colored, triangular center console, which contains the climate control unit, the heating controls, ventilation nozzles and, optionally, a touchscreen navigation system with a 5.8-inch screen, USB port and Bluetooth interface. The steering wheel, which is flattened at the bottom, is intended to improve the space available to the driver and is covered with black and purple leather. These colors and other shades of brown are used throughout the interior. The world's first airbag to be installed behind the rear seats , which is intended to protect the passengers in the rear in the event of a rear-end collision, represents a special safety feature. Due to the lack of trunk and therefore the lack of a crumple zone, the passengers in the second row of seats are particularly at risk in rear-end collisions. This airbag is intended to significantly reduce the risk of injury. In the Euro NCAP crash test in February 2009, the iQ achieved the highest rating with five out of five possible stars.

Technical components have also been designed to save space: the steering gear is high in the engine compartment, the rear shock absorbers are inclined, the heating system is compact and the tank is narrow and mounted below the floor. Even the basic version is equipped with air conditioning as standard. The engines from the Toyota Yaris, as gasoline engines with 1.0 liter displacement and three cylinders, produce around 50 kW (68 hp) or 72 kW (98 hp) in the newly developed 1.3 liter four-cylinder. The 1.4 liter four-cylinder diesel was only installed until February 29, 2012 and achieved 66 kW (90 hp) and, like the gasoline engines, was available with a manual transmission. A continuously variable CVT automatic gearshift is available for the petrol engine . From July 2009, the iQ will also be offered with a newly developed automatic start-stop system in conjunction with the 1.33 liter engine.

A total of 18,082 Toyota iQs were newly registered in Germany between 2009 and 2015. More than half of all vehicles were registered in 2009. This is due to the environmental bonus .

Concept study FT-EV

The FT-EV study was presented at the Detroit Motor Show 2009 . Based on the Toyota IQ, the concept envisages a purely battery-powered vehicle with a range of 80 km and a top speed of 110 km / h. A revised version of the study followed; Toyota speaks of the FT-EV II . The range has been extended and is now 90 km, the top speed has been reduced to 100 km / h. In 2011, the FT-EV III study with a planned range of 105 km was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show .

The special model Toyota iQ EV (Japan: Toyota eQ, USA: Scion iQ EV) emerged from the FT-EV study, which was only produced in small numbers (less than 1000 copies) for municipalities and companies from December 2012. The electric car was 3.12 m long, the top speed was sealed off at 125 km / h, the battery had a capacity of 11.6 kWh and the price was the equivalent of € 36,300. According to the manufacturer, the iQ EV was the most economical electric car in the world with a consumption of 10.4 kWh per 100 km.

Singulato iC3

Singulato iC3

At the 2019 Auto Shanghai Show, the Chinese automaker Singulato Motors presented the all-electric iC3 model based on the Toyota iQ EV. The iC3 comes about through a cooperation with Toyota: Singulato has access to the platform and the basic design, in return Toyota receives the right to purchase emission rights received in China from Singulato . The iC3 differs in the design of the front and rear sections. It is slated for a launch in China in 2021. The electric car is 3166 mm long, 1680 mm wide and 1480 mm high with a wheelbase of 2000 mm. The range is specified as 300+ km (NEDC). The iC3 should be able to charge quickly and be available at a price of around 100,000  yuan (€ 13,000).
