Andrian ([ ˈandrɪan ]; Italian Andriano ) is an Italian municipality near Bolzano in South Tyrol with 1038 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) .

The municipality of Andrian is located in the Adige Valley between Bolzano and Merano, just northwest of the Bolzano valley basin. The municipality, with a total of 4.90 km² one of the smallest in South Tyrol, extends mainly on the orographically right , western side of the valley and only extends over a small part of the other bank of the Adige . The village (250- 360  m slm ) is located on the alluvial fan of Gaider Bach , who here from the west towering Mendelkamm coming down to bottom out. Directly behind the settlement areas, the area rises - already outside the municipal area - to the terrace of Gaid, which is elevated above the Adige Valley, and further to the Gantkofel, which dominates the landscape .

Andrian borders in the north on Nals , in the east on the Terlan, which extends on the opposite side of the valley, and in the south on Eppan . Although the municipality is neither in the Überetsch nor in the Unterland , it was assigned to the Überetsch-Unterland district community for pragmatic reasons .

history

Archaeological finds ensure that the place was already settled in Roman times. Since the Etsch is navigable from Andrian, this was an economically and strategically important point.

The village of Andrian is first mentioned in an original diploma from the Gries Abbey Archives from 1186 on the occasion of a confirmation of ownership from Pope Urban III. mentioned for the Augustinian canons of Au in Bozen as "Andrian" . The existence of a ferry across the Adige is documented in other documents from this period .

There are various explanations about the origin of the name Andrian:

  • Andrian (Andrien), village in a thinly wooded mountain corner, opposite Terlan , probably from antraeanum from antrum ("round valley", "woody grotto")
  • Another theory is that “Andrianum” comes from the personal name Andrius.

In the late Middle Ages, Andrian belonged to the Tyrolean sovereign court of Neuhaus and is documented in 1490 as "Andrian in the court of Newenhaus" .

After the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy, the municipality of Andrian became by decree of the Italian King Victor Emanuel III. incorporated into the municipality of Nals on November 18, 1928 ; before that, Andrian had formed his own congregation for more than 100 years. Since 1953 Andrian has been an independent municipality again.

  • The parish church of St. Valentin has some buildings from the 13th century. Some frescoes from that period are also preserved in the sacristy. Anton Psenner created the side altar paintings in 1864.
  • The star farm above the church is adorned on the south facade by a fresco from 1519. On the north side, four scenes from the life of Jesus Christ are depicted.
  • The castle Wolfsthurn has its origins in a fortress from the 13th century., Which expanded in the 16th century. By additions and was adapted for residential purposes. In 1997 the facility was renovated and now offers u. a. Vacation rentals for tourists.
  • The Burgfest stone is a ruined castle west of Andrian from the 13th century.

Andrian's economy is based on tourism in the high season from spring to autumn and on agriculture.

The place owns ten catering establishments and several private room rental companies, including on farms. A total of around 500 beds are made available for tourists.

Agriculture focuses on growing fruit and wine. There are 50 hectares of vineyards in the Andrians area.

In Andrian there is a primary school that is part of the German school district of the neighboring municipality of Terlan.

Others

Andrian has the smallest independent Raiffeisenkasse in South Tyrol. Their catchment area is almost exclusively limited to the municipal area of ​​Andrian.

In 1893, the first and therefore the oldest winery cooperative in South Tyrol was founded in Andrian .

The summit cross of the Gantkofel was set up in such a way that it is at the highest point when viewed from the village center, even if it is de facto not the highest point on the mountain. Every year the Andrians light a fire in the shape of the Tyrolean eagle on the steep face of the Gantkofel for the traditional Tyrolean Sacred Heart celebration in June.

Andrian maintains friendly contacts with the large district town of Bietigheim-Bissingen in Baden-Württemberg , Germany . These go back to the former Bissingen councilor Reinhold Mahl, who made new friends in Andrian during his captivity in World War II .
