The Toyota Avensis is a mid -range car model , which was manufactured by the Japanese Toyota Motor Corporation from autumn 1997 to spring 2018. Its predecessor was the Toyota Carina .
Model history
The Toyota Avensis has earned a reputation for being a reliable car because of its consistently good performance in breakdown statistics and TÜV reports.
As the successor to the Carina (T19), the first generation (T22) was presented in October 1997 in the body variants notchback, hatchback (liftback) and combi. The revised version followed in autumn 2000, which, in addition to optical modifications such as clear glass headlights, also had to offer three new motors with D4 or VVT-i technology.
The second generation (T25) was introduced in early 2003. It was specially developed for Europe; Bosch technology was used on a large scale at Toyota for the first time. T25 is the first Toyota to come entirely from Europe: design from Nice , gearboxes from Waldenburg , engines from Jelcz-Laskowice and final production in Burnaston , Derbyshire .
The revised second-generation model was available from mid-2006, which was recognizable by the modified front apron, LED flashing lights in the exterior mirror and clear glass lights at the front and rear. The Executive version received xenon headlights and a CD changer as standard .
At the end of 2008 Toyota presented the third model generation (T27), which has been on the market since the beginning of 2009. Almost identical in size to the T25, quite a few things had changed in terms of engine technology. Toyota Optimal Drive is said to reduce fuel consumption by up to a quarter, and in some cases even increase performance. The petrol engines rely on the new Valvematic technology, which adapts the valve lift and timing to the driving situation. For diesel engines, D-4D and D-CAT technologies, which meet Euro 5 , are still used . The liftback version is no longer offered. An electric handbrake is used for the first time. A 6-speed automatic transmission has been available for the Avensis 2.2 D-4D since April 2009.
From summer 2001 a seven-seat van version called Toyota Avensis Verso was available, which replaced the Toyota Picnic . It received a facelift in autumn 2003.
Sales of the Verso in Germany were discontinued in mid-2005. Until the end of 2009, the vehicle was only available outside of Germany, including the Toyota Ipsum .
Toyota announced the re-marketing of the Toyota Camry in early 2019 . It is therefore considered the successor to the Avensis, which expired in spring 2018.

The Avensis presented in October 1997 with the factory code T22 came onto the market in January 1998. It was specially developed for European customer requirements. With the Avensis, Toyota designed a completely new vehicle, so that only the engine and similar contours remained from the predecessor Carina. The Avensis was offered like this in the three body versions notchback, hatchback and station wagon, the latter a derivative of the Toyota Caldina sold only in Japan . There was a choice of four engines: three petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel.
Thanks to many components that the Avensis shared with other series, solid quality was created with the resulting long service life. He also came up with a comfortable interior and good driving qualities.

Facelift
In September 2000 the Avensis was revised. Externally, this could be recognized by changed aprons, headlights and taillights with clear glass optics and a Toyota logo that had migrated into the radiator grille. The revised engines were now equipped with variable valve control (VVT-I). In terms of equipment, the range was supplemented by a sports model called "SR" with optical changes and a modified suspension.
In August 2001, the van offshoot Avensis Verso followed, which had seven seats. A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 110 kW (150 PS) and a 2.0-liter diesel 85 kW (115 PS) were available as engines. In Australia this model was simply called Avensis, because the other Avensis model variants were not sold there. The Avensis (Verso) won the title for Australia's Best People Mover 2002.

Production of the second Avensis started in February 2003. Sales began a month later.
With the Avensis T25, Toyota dared to break new ground and gave the Avensis a handsome, but still independent design, which was drawn in the Toyota design studio in France. The previous engines remained and were only supplemented by another large-capacity engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters. Surprisingly, the “European” Toyota was also sold to Japan.
In Australia, the estate version of the Toyota Camry was replaced by the Avensis T25 estate, but only with the 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines. There were also differences to Great Britain, but the 1.6-liter engine was omitted here.
After Toyota completely stopped importing the Camry in the summer of 2004, the Avensis became the brand's best-selling sedan in Europe.
The van called Avensis Verso was given a facelift in autumn 2003 and continued to be built until mid-2005.
In June 2006 the series received a facelift. The new features included the turn signals now in the side mirror, a new front apron and a radiator grille adapted to the family look. The interior has also been technically and visually upgraded.
The models with xenon headlights from 2003 to 2007 often have problems with the light output after a few years because the lenses become blind due to cloudiness.

The third edition of the Toyota Avensis was presented at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2008, and its market launch took place in February 2009.
The third Avensis series, known internally as the T27, takes up the stylistic idiom of the Toyota Corolla offered on the North American market . In this way, the brand design that has long been introduced in the USA is also to be implemented in Europe. Compared to its predecessors, there is no longer a hatchback version of this Avensis.
The engine range includes three petrol and three diesel engines. All have more power and lower CO 2 emissions. The new ZR engines are equipped with Toyota Valvematic technology. All units are available with a 6-speed manual gearbox; the Multidrive S CVT gearbox is optionally available for the 1.8 and 2.0-liter petrol engines , while the 2.2 D-4D has a 6-speed gearbox for the diesel versions -Automatic is offered.
In February 2009, the Avensis was subjected to the Euro NCAP crash test and received the highest rating of 5 stars for occupant safety.
Model maintenance
2011
At the end of 2011, the Avensis underwent a slight facelift, which has been available from dealers since January 21, 2012. The features of this facelift are the revised front area and the modified rear lights.
2015
Another revision of the Avensis was announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015. The modified vehicle was officially launched on June 20, 2015.
In addition to the new Safety Sense safety system , new motors are also used. The new turbocharged 2.0-l direct-injection petrol engine is an in-house development by Toyota, while BMW is now supplying a 1.6-l four-cylinder and a 2.0-l four-cylinder diesel.
In August 2017, Toyota took the sedan off the market in Germany.
