The 1996/97 DEL season was the third season of the German Ice Hockey League . The German champions were the Adler Mannheim , while the play-downs losers Ratinger Löwen and Wedemark Scorpions were able to hold the class in the relegation round against EHC Neuwied and TSV Erding .

Mode and rules

Initially, a single round was played with 30 games per team. Then the teams in places one to six played a championship and the seventh to 16th a relegation round from up to 16. The games of the championship round were played as a double round, while the relegation round was played as a single round. The first two teams of the relegation round qualified for the play-off places seven and eight, in the championship round they only fought for the best starting place. The other teams in the relegation round played in the play-downs from the two teams that had to play against the best teams in the first division to stay relegated .
