Diou is a French commune with 1,398 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Allier in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Moulins and the canton of Dompierre-sur-Besbre .

geography

The municipality is located on the left bank of the Loire , on the northern border of the Sologne Bourbonnaise landscape , about 30 kilometers east of Moulins and 20 kilometers northwest of Digoin . Neighboring municipalities to Diou are:

Since the Loire forms the border with the Burgundy region here , the communities in the north and northeast are already in the neighboring Saône-et-Loire department . Hydrologically , the Loire and the accompanying Canal latéral à la Loire (German: Loire Lateral Canal ) dominate. But the Roudon and Besbre rivers also cross the municipality and flow into the Loire in the far northwest as left tributaries.

history

Antiquity

It is believed that Gaius Iulius Caesar came here in 52 BC. BC had a so-called impedimenta set up before he went to Gergovia . In such a camp everything was kept that was not suitable for battle, i.e. grain, public money (pay), hostages and replacement horses. The Haeduer , in whose tribal area the camp was located, revolted and conquered it that same year. Caesar himself writes of the oppidum as Noviodunum Haeduorum . For a long time, Noviodunum was equated with today's Nevers , which is now a matter of dispute.

Transport links

A higher-ranking road connection is given with the national road 79 , which runs between Diou and Dompierre-sur-Besbre and thus supplies both places. Diou also has a train station on the Moulins- Mâcon railway line . Diou can even be reached by water: although the Loire itself is not navigable, the Loire Lateral Canal is navigable for peniches as well as sport boats and houseboats , which is also interesting for tourism . In Diou there is a berth for boats on the canal.
