The 1984/85 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 27th season of the highest German ice hockey league . The German champions became SB Rosenheim , who not only won the double round, but also emerged victorious from all play-off games. The ten-time title holder SC Riessersee managed for the second time in a row to secure relegation, while newcomer EHC Essen-West had to relegate after one year of membership in the Bundesliga. The place of the Essen took the SV Bayreuth , which for the first time in its club history could rise in the top division.

mode

As two years before, the final round was played in the classic play-off mode. Instead of the group phase, as in the previous season , a quarter-finals were held again, but this was the first time that the “ best-of-five ” mode was used. Placement games for places 5 to 8 were completely dispensed with in view of the lack of audience response in previous years, the ranking in the double round was now decisive for the final placement. The relegation round was significantly increased; the last two in the Bundesliga met the best eight teams in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Transfers

Rosenheim strengthened itself with Franz Reindl from Riessersee. In Düsseldorf, the management signed Chris Valentine , who had played for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the past three years , and Jörg Hiemer from Freiburg and Mike Schmidt and Miroslav Nentvich from Mannheim were brought in. Since Mannheim had also given up its two contingent players Bill Lochead (Chur) and Doug Berry (Geneva), the Binghamton Whalers brought in two top-class players, Paul Messier and Ross Yates from Iserlohn . In addition, defender Thomas Gandorfer came from Landshut . Newcomers Essen brought Dave Hatheway from Schwenningen, but with Bruce Hardy and Earl Spry had to hand over two of his heroes of the promotion to Iserlohn. Even Klaus Auhuber from Landshut, peter gailer from Cologne and Miroslav Ďuriš from the Toronto Maple Leafs came to Iserlohn. In Riessersee they strengthened themselves with the Czechoslovaks Libor Havlíček , the German-Canadian Ron Fischer , who was sporadically used in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabers , international Martin Hinterstocker from Iserlohn and Ralph Krueger from Schwenningen. The two Poles Justyn Denisiuk and Bogusław Maj , who had to pause the previous season after their escape, signed on in Cologne, where the young defender Robert Sterflinger had also been brought from Riessersee. There they needed a replacement for Uli Hiemer , who had moved to the NHL.
