About this picture
Baiersbronn-Oberdorf

Baiersbronn is a municipality in the Freudenstadt district . It belongs to the Northern Black Forest region and is the second largest municipality in Baden-Württemberg in terms of area , directly behind the state capital Stuttgart . The Black Forest village, located about five kilometers northwest of Freudenstadt , is a tourist destination and known for its top gastronomy. Therefore, Baiersbronn is often referred to as the “ star village ”. The Black Forest National Park, which has existed since the beginning of 2014, is largely within the boundaries of the municipality.

geography

Geographical location

The municipal area of Baiersbronn extends from the Murgtal at 450  m above sea level. NN to the Dreifürstenstein east of the Hornisgrinde at 1153  m altitude, which is also the highest point in Württemberg .

Community structure

The community consists of the districts Baiersbronn-Dorf with Friedrichstal, Huzenbach, Klosterreichenbach with Reichenbacher Höfe and Heselbach, Mitteltal, Obertal with Buhlbach, Röt-Schönegründ, Tonbach and Schwarzenberg with Schönmünzach and Schönmünz with a total of 115 villages, hamlets, Zinken, courtyards and houses .

The districts are officially named in the form "Baiersbronn– ...". In the districts of Klosterreichenbach, Röt-Schönegründ and Huzenbach as well as the two districts of Schwarzenberg and Schönmünz together, there are localities within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code, each with its own local council and mayor as its chairman. For the election of the local council in the village of Schönmünz, the false sub-district selection is used accordingly and the electoral area is divided into three residential areas. In the other parts of the town, districts are set up with their own district advisory council in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg municipal code .

In the municipal area within the boundaries of 1970 are the desert areas Strubenhart, Talbechenhalde, Bruderhaus, Dietersbronnen, Diebelsbach and Kannenwald. The Grasegenouwa, Schrampach or Vortpach and Bubabenhütte deserts are located in the area of the former municipality of Schwarzenberg.

Spatial development of the municipal area

The following formerly independent municipalities belong to the larger municipality of Baiersbronn

  • Baiersbronn with the districts of Buhlbach, Friedrichstal, Mitteltal , Obertal Schönmünz and Tonbach (Kniebis was outgrown in 1974 in exchange with the Jägerloch zu Freudenstadt)
  • Huzenbach (1974 in Baiersbronn; until 1818 near Schwarzenberg)
  • Klosterreichenbach with Reichenbacher Höfe and Heselbach, which was incorporated in 1936 (January 1, 1974 in Baiersbronn)
  • Röt (September 1, 1971 in Baiersbronn)
  • Schwarzenberg with Schönmünzach, Zwickgabel, Vorder-, Mittel- and Hinterlangenbach (1974 to Baiersbronn)

history

Baiersbronn

Baiersbronn, which has belonged to Württemberg since 1320 , was first mentioned in a document in 1292. A first school is recorded in 1627.

A contemporary treatise by the Royal Statistical-Topographical Bureau from 1858 wrote about the people in the Freudenstadt district of the Kingdom of Württemberg and in particular the Baiersbronners :

The breed of people is generally not very strong, rather under than over medium stature, rather poor than well nourished and more pale and sickly than fresh and healthy complexion. This is especially true of Baiersbronn, whose population has visibly deteriorated and stunted through excessive work and hardship of all kinds [...]. Regardless of this weak appearance, however, these people, namely the Baiersbronn people, are very hardened against atmospheric influences and physical exertion and show an unusual tenacity and resistance to diseases and physical injuries. "

Due to the social situation (bad harvests, general poverty), many Baiersbronn residents emigrated to North America from the middle of the 19th century. In 1901, the Murgtalbahn was connected to the route network of the Württemberg State Railways and the neighboring Baden State Railways , which resulted in an economic upturn. Baiersbronn became a climatic health resort and winter sports area.

In the upper Murg Valley, people traditionally settled in individual farmsteads. Little by little hamlets and settlements, called parcels, emerged. During the National Socialist era , street names were introduced in the old municipality of Baiersbronn in 1935.

Other places

The other localities of Klosterreichenbach, Heselbach, Röt, Huzenbach and Schwarzenberg emerged as closed localities. Both Buhlbach and Schönmünzach emerged from the founding of glassworks in the late 18th century.

The Langenbach and, after unification, the Schönmünz represent an ancient border. This brook has been a tribal border between the Alemanni ( Swabians ) and Franconia since 496 and is still a dialect border today. For many centuries it was also the state border between Baden and Württemberg.

Administrative affiliation

Since 1938 Baiersbronn has belonged to the Freudenstadt district . After the Second World War, the place became part of the French occupation zone and was thus assigned to the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which in 1952 became part of the newly founded state of Baden-Württemberg .

Incorporations

On September 1, 1971, the municipality of Röt was incorporated. Huzenbach, Klosterreichenbach and Schwarzenberg followed on January 1, 1974.

Residents

Mainly because of the geographically remote location, weddings took place 'in the valley' for centuries. As a result, the family names Braun, Finkbeiner (over 150x), Frey, Gaiser (over 170x), Haist, Klumpp (over 100x) and Züfle are disproportionately represented. Other long-established clans also include the Beilharz, Eberhardt, Ehmann, Fahrner, Faißt, Glaser, Günt (h) er, Keck, Mast, Möhrle, Morlok, Pfau, Rapp, Rothfuß, Schmelzle, Seidt, Trück, Wein, Würth and Wurster.

By the already mentioned geographical conditions, a special developed in the Altgemeinde Baiersbronn dialect within the Swabian dialect space that separates the Baiersbronner language of the inhabitants of the surrounding communities.

The inhabitants of the Murg valley were mainly employed in agriculture and timber . Not only did the forest fire of 1800 impoverish the Murgtal, but the almost complete deforestation by the wood companies led to it. Only with the increase in tourism after the Second World War did Baiersbronn experience an economic boom.

As of December 31, 2015, the community had 14,667 inhabitants.

religion

Baiersbronn received its first church in 1430. Since then, one can count on the existence of a “Marian foster care”. In 1492 it became an independent pastor's office after it had previously belonged to Dornstetten . Since the Reformation in Württemberg, Baiersbronn has been evangelical and pietistic .

The Reichenbach Monastery only introduced the new faith in 1595. In addition to today's six Protestant parishes in the entire parish, there has been a Roman Catholic parish since the middle of the 20th century that belongs to the Freudenstadt dean's office . There are also five New Apostolic churches. In the meantime, an Evangelical Methodist and the Free Church Christ Church have also been founded.

Sub-locations

Baiersbronn village with Friedrichstal

The main town of the municipality is Baiersbronn with almost 5400 inhabitants. The district of Friedrichstal with a further 400 inhabitants can look back on early industrialization thanks to the Swabian iron and steel works . Above all, the scythes from Friedrichstal were famous.

Huzenbach

Huzenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1289 when Count Palatine Ludwig von Tübingen donated the place to the Reichenbach Monastery . For centuries, the Huzenbachers lived primarily from the timber industry. Huzenbach, which until then had belonged to Schwarzenberg, became independent in 1810. Today it has around 700 inhabitants.

Klosterreichenbach with Heselbach and Reichenbacher Höfe

Klosterreichenbach

The Klosterreichenbach was in 1085 as a daughter house of hirsau abbey by Bishop Gebhard consecrated. After the introduction of the Reformation , the prior and his monks were forced to flee in 1595 and Reichenbach became a secular Reformed community and the seat of the monastery office of the same name . In 1897 the place was renamed from Reichenbach to Klosterreichenbach. The neighboring town of Heselbach was incorporated in 1936. Klosterreichenbach has approx. 2420 inhabitants.

Mitteltal

Mitteltal

The largest part of the "old community" Baiersbronn is about 4 km west of the mother town. Due to the west-east orientation of the Murg Valley, there is a pronounced winter and summer side here. The almost 2100 inhabitants of Mitteltal live in typical scattered settlements , also known as "parcels". The place is famous above all for the " Hotel Bareiss " and the vehicle factory "Müller Mitteltal". In the early 20th century, Kolb & Schüle AG ran a flax roasting plant in Mitteltal. In 2003 the “Morlokhof”, built by the miracle healer family, was acquired by hotelier Bareiss and lovingly restored. For this he received the Baden-Württemberg Monument Protection Prize in 2008 . Since 2009 there has been a natural pool in Mitteltal , which arose from the old outdoor pool.

Obertal with Buhlbach

Center of Obertal

Schwarzenberg

The climatic health resort Obertal has about 1330 inhabitants. Its origins lie in the Tannenfels valley with the Tannenfels castle ruins . Later, the Buhlbach district gained in importance due to the local glassworks. The glassworks operated from 1721 to 1909. In 2004, under the leadership of Dora-Luise Klumpp, the Förderverein Glashütte Buhlbach e. V. with the aim of preserving the remaining parts of the glassworks and expanding them into a cultural park. This has now become a popular destination. Today the place is characterized by tourism.

Röt-Schönegründ

Röt-Schönegründ was first mentioned in a document in 1282. During the Thirty Years War it was occupied and devastated by imperial troops. In 1812 a fire destroyed the place again, which did not spare the church either. From 1890 onwards, with industrialization (including sawmills), the municipality's economic boom began. About 760 people live here.

Schwarzenberg with Schönmünzach and Schönmünz

The founding of the Reichenbach monastery also led to the first mention of Schwarzenberg in 1085, because an estate in the village was donated to the new monastery. A glassworks was built in the Schwarzenberg district in 1773 , which existed until the beginning of the 20th century and from which the Schönmünzach district developed. The poet Wilhelm Hauff received the inspiration for his fairy tale The Cold Heart during a visit to Schwarzenberg. Schönmünzach has been a Kneipp health resort since 1953 . Here the river Schönmünz flows into the Murg . The Schönmünz district stretches along the Schönmünz and Langenbach rivers. It consists of the settlements and hamlets of Zwickgabel, Schönmünz (or Volzenhäuser), Leimiß, Vorder-, Mittel- and Hinterlangenbach. Around 960 people live here.

Tonbach

The small side valley with no through traffic flows into the Murg Valley shortly after Baiersbronn from the northwest and has around 800 residents. Tonbach is particularly famous for its gastronomy, especially the Hotel Traube Tonbach .

  • In the Königshammer Museum, a reconstructed wide hammer and other exhibits remind of the history of iron processing in Friedrichstal. From 1810 to 1965 there was a hammer mill of the Royal Ironworks on the site of the museum . A 4.6 km long circular route in the valley of the hammers leads to sites of mining and forestry, and through the industrial and workers' settlement to the former hammer mills.
  • Kulturpark Glashütte Buhlbach in Obertal Buhlbach: The Glashütte Buhlbach, founded in 1758, was one of the largest industrial companies in the Black Forest with around 200 employees in the middle of the 19th century. Monuments

  • With the Alexanderschanze there is a ground monument that points to a military security system built by Duke Carl Alexander von Württemberg in 1734 near Baiersbronn. It was part of a line of fortifications on the knee ridge and intended to defend the pass road across the Black Forest.
  • The Röschenschanze near the Hotel Zuflucht is exactly on the former border between Baden and Württemberg, partly in the Baiersbronn area, partly it belongs to Oppenau .
  • On the Rinkenkopf is the Rinkenmauer , a fortification whose time and purpose are still unknown today.

gastronomy

Until 2020, Baiersbronn was the only German place with two 3-star restaurants according to the Michelin Guide :

The Schloßberg restaurant at Hotel Sackmann (head chef Jörg Sackmann ) in Schwarzenberg and the Köhlerstube at Hotel Traube in Tonbach (head chef: Florian Stolte ) each had a further Michelin star in 2019 . There are a total of eight Michelin stars in Baiersbronn - unique in Germany in this narrow space.

Natural sights

Several cirque lakes lie on the Baiersbronn district. These include the Huzenbacher See and the Wildsee . To the southwest, a hiking trail leads approx. 4.5 km through the Sankenbachtal up to the Sankenbachsee . In its basin there was originally another cirque lake. However, this leaked around 3,000 years ago because the Sankenbach washed away the terminal moraine that dammed the lake. In 1980–1981, the Obertal Forestry Office and the Freudenstadt Water Management Office filled up an earth wall so that a lake built up again. A steep path leads from there up to the Sankenbach waterfalls . Over a cirque face from the Lower Buntsandstein , they fall 40 m deep into the valley in two steps.

The Black Forest National Park is largely located in the district of Baiersbronn.
