La Châtaigneraie is a French city ​​with 2544 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the canton of La Châtaigneraie in the arrondissement of Fontenay-le-Comte in the Vendée department .

history

In 1698 a court ( tribunal royal ) was established and so many officials came to La Châtaigneraie . In the uprising of the Vendée (1793-1796) the citizens were on the side of the republic and so the city was stormed by the rebels on May 13, 1793. In May 1794 the Comité de Salut Public ordered La Châtaigneraie to be destroyed, but it was not carried out.
