List of Austriasisms

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this list of Austrians words are listed in alphabetical order that are characteristic of Austrian German . Outside of Austria, these words are generally misunderstood as dialectal , even if many of them are, however, just as standard in accordance with the pluricentric language concept as the variants used in German-speaking Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, East Belgium, South Tyrol or Germany. Analogue words to Austriazismus are Helvetism and Teutonism or Germanyism . The Austrian Dictionary (ÖWB) is authoritative for the definition of the Austrian standard language .

Some Austrians are also used in Bavaria because of their dialectical proximity . Others, such as the numerous culinary specifics, can be traced back to the historical connection with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and other countries within the Habsburg monarchy .

Due to the consumption of German media and other contacts to Germany, the German equivalents of Austriasisms are well known in Austria. Linguists discovered in 2012 that more and more West German expressions are being used in Austria. The younger generation in particular already uses terms that are considered to be German in some cases.

The words listed are divided into three categories:
  • Words without a note: Austrian standard German
  • Words with the mark coll. (= Colloquial): common in everyday language, recognizable in standard Austrian German as terms from another language class
  • Words tagged with mda. (= dialect): Words from the Austrian dialects which, for stylistic reasons, are occasionally interspersed in colloquial or high-level texts, e.g. in press releases or Austrian literature .

The inclusion of an Austrianism in this list does not necessarily mean that the use of this word is restricted to Austria, nor that this word is common everywhere in Austria. In addition, the German equivalent in Austria can sometimes be used synonymously.
