Sevenans is a commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the location of the Technical University of Belfort-Montbéliard .

geography

Sevenans is 341 m above sea level, about six kilometers south of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the area of the Burgundian Gate , on the eastern edge of the wide valley of the Savoureuse opposite Bermont.

The area of the municipal area of 2.02 km² includes a section of the slightly undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The western border runs in the middle of the approximately one kilometer wide valley plain of the Savoureuse, which flows with several turns to the south and provides drainage to the Allan . The waterway of the Canal de la Haute-Saône , a branch of the Rhine-Rhône Canal, is also located in the valley floor . Various former sand and gravel pits on the valley floor have now been flooded.

From the course of the river, the community area extends eastward over the valley level, which is an average of 340 m, and the slope of Sevenans to the adjacent plateau. This is subdivided by the valleys of several short side streams of the Savoureuse. At 372 m, the highest point of Sevenans is reached on these hills.

The hamlet of Leupe (349 m) in a side valley of the Savoureuse belongs to Sevenans . Neighboring municipalities of Sevenans are Andelnans in the north, Meroux and Moval in the east, Trévenans and Bermont in the south and Dorans and Botans in the west.

history

Sevenans was first mentioned in writing in 1147 in a document from the Lanthenans Priory . Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Sevenans came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century . Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Sevenans belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. With the opening of the tram from Montbéliard to Belfort in 1913, Sevenans was connected to the public transport network. However, operations on the line were given up again in 1940. Since 1998, Sevenans was initially part of the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

The Château Saglio was built around 1750, renovated in 2003 and now houses part of the offices of the Technical University of Belfort-Montbéliard . Also worth seeing is the leaning tower in modern glass architecture belonging to the campus . Other sights include a wayside cross from 1862, the village fountain from the 19th century and the parish hall. The Mairie and school building was added to the old chapel of the castle at the end of the 19th century. The chapel has been restored and converted into a conference room, the blue glazed windows of which earned it the name “Mairie bleue”.
