The Saone-et-Loire [ sonelwaːʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 71. It is in the east of the country in the Region Bourgogne Franche-Comté and by the rivers Saone and Loire named.
geography
The Saône-et-Loire is bordered to the north by the department of Côte-d'Or , in the east of the Jura , in the southeast of the department of Ain , on the south by the departments of Rhône and Loire , in the west of the Allier and in Northwest to the Nièvre department .
While the Loire predominantly forms the western border to the Allier department, the Saône , on which Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon are also the two largest cities of the department , flows through the eastern part of Saône-et-Loire in a north-south direction. The northwest of the department extends into the granite massif of the Morvan .
history
The department was created on March 4, 1790 from parts of the province of Burgundy .
From 1960 to 2015 it was part of the Burgundy region that became part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in 2016 .
