Sarah Maria Sun (born February 15, 1978 in Hamm ) is a German singer ( soprano ).

Life

Sarah Maria Sun grew up on a farm. She began to learn classical guitar at the age of 5 and won various competitions with the instrument as a child and adolescent. She was a young student at the Folkwang University of the Arts with Hans Gräf. From the age of 9 she also received singing lessons. After graduating from high school, she finished her career as a guitarist, studied opera and lied singing in Cologne and Stuttgart and then learned from Darinka Segota and Tanja Ariane Baumgartner.

She is internationally known as an interpreter of contemporary music . In addition to numerous songs, opera and oratorios, her repertoire includes over nine hundred compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries. In the course of time she has participated in more than three hundred world premieres. From 2007 to 2014 she was the first soprano of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart . In 2012, 2016 and 2018 the NDR dedicated its own portrait concerts as part of the NDR series . In 2017 for the role of Elsa in Lohengrin by Salvatore Sciarrino at the Salzburg Easter Festival and in 2019 as Gwen in 4.48 Psychosis in Philip Venables' opera based on the play by Sarah Kane at Semper Zwei in Dresden, she was recognized by Opernwelt magazine as a singer of the year nominated.

She sang under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle , Kent Nagano , Alan Gilbert , Thomas Hengelbrock , Susanna Mälkki , Peter Rundel and Heinz Holliger . She also worked with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig , the Berliner Philharmoniker , the symphony orchestras of the NDR , BR , SWR and WDR , the Dresden Philharmonic , the Antwerp and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra as well as ensembles such as musikFabrik , Ensemble Modern , ensemble mosaik, Ensemble intercontemporain , the string quartets Diotima, Arditti , Minguet and Signum .

For master classes for vocal music of the 20th and 21st centuries she taught a. a. at the universities and colleges in Oslo, Harvard, Chicago, Stockholm, Zurich, Lucerne, Rostock, Moscow, Dresden, Hanover and Berlin. She has been a lecturer at the Lucerne School of Music since 2019 . She is vegan and is committed to animal rights.
