The VW Brasília was a Brazilian in-house development of a station wagon made by Volkswagen do Brasil . Around one million copies of the vehicle were produced in Brazil from 1973 to March 1982 and in Mexico from 1974 to 1982, and also assembled in Nigeria from March 1976 under the name VW Igala .

The basic construction and several details of the Brasília models come from the VW Beetle. Despite the similarity to the 411/412 models, the Brasilia does not have a self-supporting body. The floor assembly also has no resemblance to that of the VW Type 3 , it comes from the Beetle (with widened floor panels like the VW Karmann-Ghia Type 14 and VW Type 181 ), but the details have been changed. The jack mountings are different, the attachment of the front axle has been changed, the center tunnel is deeper and under the torsion bar there is a reinforcement welded on like the VW type 181. The car can be seen as a further development of the Volkswagen prototype EA 97 from 1960 for Latin America. In contrast to the VW Type 3, it had no so-called flat engine, but the Beetle engine, which was built tall because of the blower box (optionally also with two carburettors). Volkswagen do Brasil had its own VW 1600 on offer from 1968 to 1977 , which after a facelift in 1971 was very similar to the VW Brasília. The twin headlights were taken over from the VW SP2 and were also used in the VW Type 4, then known as the 412, from model year 1973 .

Numerous specimens of this type are still to be found in the country in South America . But it is also possible to find such vehicles in Portugal and the Canary Islands.
