Mörfelden-Walldorf is a twin town with over 34,000 inhabitants, after Rüsselsheim am Main, the second largest town in the Groß-Gerau district in southern Hesse .
The southern part of Frankfurt Airport is partly in the area of the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf.

Geographical location
Mörfelden-Walldorf is located in the sub -Main level in the Rhine-Main area , in the triangle between the southern Hessian cities of Frankfurt am Main , Darmstadt and Wiesbaden and south of Frankfurt Airport . The city centers of Walldorf in the north and Mörfelden in the south are around 3.8 kilometers apart. Between the two districts there is still an undeveloped open space of up to 1.5 kilometers, only interrupted by a tree school and a comprehensive school. In the west, the urban area is part of the extensive Mönchbruch nature reserve . East of Mörfelden, on the A 5 , is the Oberwaldberg (145 m), which arose from a former garbage dump, the highest point in the Groß-Gerau district.

history
Moerfelden
Mörfelden was first mentioned in Codex Laureshamensis from 830 to 850 under the name Mersenualt and belongs to the Franconian imperial estate. In the historical documents Mörfelden place in the following centuries, among other things with these place names Mention: Mersfelt in 1016, Mersevelt in the 13th and 14th centuries, Merßfeldt 1413 Merffeld 1550 More Felden 1573, up from 1,614 Mörfelden remains common. In the Middle Ages, there were large forests around Mörfelden , which were part of the Dreieich Reich Forest, the so-called Wildbann Dreieich . The legal relationships of the wild bans were recorded in a wild banned manner. This was written down in 1338 at the instigation of Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian on the May court in Langen. Due to its favorable traffic situation on trade routes since time immemorial, Mörfelden developed into an important trading and traffic center, which received its own customs office in the 15th century. The Thirty Years War interrupted this development. The village was plundered and devastated several times. The plague then contributed to the fact that at the end of the war in 1648 almost nothing was left of the emerging trading center. It took many decades until the population of around 500 was reached again. At the end of the 18th century, Mörfelden only had about 900 inhabitants again.
In 1600 Mörfelden became part of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , which became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806 . It was administered by the Kelsterbach Office until 1820 , which from 1816 belonged to the Starkenburg Province of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In 1821 district districts were introduced in the Grand Duchy and Mörfelden was assigned to the district of Langen . In 1832 the units were enlarged one more time and circles were created. This brought Mörfelden to the Groß-Gerau district. The provinces, the counties and the administrative districts of the Grand Duchy were abolished on July 31, 1848 and replaced by administrative districts, but this was reversed on May 12, 1852. As a result, Mörfelden belonged to the Darmstadt administrative district between 1848 and 1852 , before the Groß-Gerau district was again responsible for the higher-level administration. The place remained there until today through all further administrative reforms.
In the 19th century the place developed into a workers 'settlement, in the 1920s it even became a stronghold of the workers' movement . This development was violently ended in the 1930s by the National Socialist rulers .
After the Second World War and the currency reform of 1948, Mörfelden became a preferred residential area. Initially through the admission of displaced persons and refugees and later through constant influx from outside, a strong increase in population set in, which has persisted until the present day.
The municipality was elevated to a city on March 18, 1968 by the Hessian Minister of the Interior .
Walldorf
Walldorf was founded in 1699 as the "Waldensian colony at Gundhof" by 14 families. Earlier, Landgrave Ernst-Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt had agreed to accept Waldensians - Protestant French refugees - in his country, which had been largely depopulated by the Thirty Years' War. In 1715 the place got its current name. It shares administrative history with Mörfelden.
After long years of financial difficulties, Walldorf was able to build a church in 1804/05 with the help of donations from the Reformed congregations in Frankfurt, Holland, Great Britain and Switzerland. The German language only gradually gained acceptance, but in 1815 even the service was no longer held in French.
After the Frankfurt - Mannheim railway started operating in 1879, the previously rural town turned into a workers' settlement. The upswing, characterized by constant influx, was interrupted by the two world wars.
From 23 August to 24 November 1944 in Walldorf consisting KZ Walldorf . 1,700 Jewish girls and women were abducted from Hungary in 1944 and had to carry out expansion and repair work on the runways at Frankfurt Airport. This chapter of the past was forgotten for the time being and was only rediscovered in 1972 by three interested young people. Since 2000, a historical educational trail with a memorial stone as a starting point has been a reminder of the former Walldorf subcamp; it was opened in the presence of surviving women from the camp and with the assistance of Peter Härtling .
After the Second World War, many displaced persons and refugees had to be taken in, which brought many problems with it, but also drove the development into a small town.
In 1962 the municipality was elevated to a city by resolution of the Hessian state parliament.
Moerfelden-Walldorf
The city of Mörfelden-Walldorf was created on January 1, 1977 as part of the regional reform in Hesse through a merger of the previously independent cities of Mörfelden and Walldorf under the pressure of a request for incorporation by the city of Frankfurt am Main through the law on the reorganization of the district of Groß-Gerau . For one year the city was then called Waldfelden , but at the request of the magistrate of the newly founded city, the state government renamed it Mörfelden-Walldorf with effect from January 1, 1978.
In 1973 the Bertha-von-Suttner School was built in the An den Nußbäume land district between Walldorf and Mörfelden as an integrated comprehensive school with upper secondary school. Its central location symbolizes the imaginary center of the twin towns of Mörfelden-Walldorf.

According to the 2011 census , there were 32,380 inhabitants in Mörfelden-Walldorf on May 9, 2011. politics
The workers' parties have always been strong in Mörfelden-Walldorf; before 1933, the two then independent districts were strongholds of the KPD . For a long time the NSDAP was unable to gain a foothold in Mörfelden.
In the local elections on March 6, 2016, the SPD remained the strongest party despite significant losses. The winners of the election were the first-time free voters, who got 10 seats in parliament from scratch, and the DKP , which has been represented here in the local parliament since the 1970s. The FDP was also able to improve from 1 to 3 seats in the last local election in 2011. Since the resistance movement against the West runway at Frankfurt Airport, the Greens have traditionally been firmly anchored in Mörfelden-Walldorf, but they have currently suffered enormous losses.

Mayor is Thomas Winkler (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen). He replaced Heinz-Peter Becker (SPD) on July 20, 2019 , after winning the runoff election on April 7, 2019 with 56.49% (Heinz-Peter Becker scored 43.51%). In the election on March 24, 2019, Thomas Winkler had 33.86% of the vote, just ahead of Heinz Peter Becker (31.27%) as well as Karsten Groß (CDU, 27.40%) and Alfred Arndt (DKP / Linke Liste, 7 , 48%).

In the Walldorf district, the Hamburger Betreuungs- und Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH (Bewobau) built a residential estate based on designs by Richard Neutra in the early 1960s . The settlement consists of 42 single or two-story single and double houses, which are designed as type buildings . Typical features of the Neutra style are characteristic of the houses, such as large glass surfaces, flowing transitions between interior and exterior spaces, “ reflecting ponds ”, overhanging flat roofs with “spider leg” supports and asymmetrical floor plans. Long-distance cultural hiking trail Huguenot and Waldensian trails
The Huguenot and Waldensian long-distance cultural hiking trail leads from La Poët-Laval in France and Torino in Italy via Mörfelden-Walldorf to Bad Karlshafen in northern Hesse. A 9-kilometer section of the 1,800-kilometer hiking trail leads along the Oberwaldsee (east of Mörfelden) and through Walldorf. At the Oberwaldsee and the Schnepfensee, the history of the Waldensians is presented on display boards with the themes of faith and society, the medieval lay and poverty movement and the arrival in a foreign country.
Art in public space
In relation to its population, the city has an astonishing number of modern works of art to be admired in public spaces. The city is right at the top in a national comparison. The reason and origin can be found in the annual sculpture exhibition Sculptures in the Park , which the chemist and artist Otto Schaffner brought to life in 1998. He later founded the Mörfelden-Walldorf Municipal Gallery together with other artists. In addition to other exhibitions of contemporary art, the municipal gallery organizes the sculptures in the park (with award winners) every summer . In recent years established and internationally successful sculptors, including ER Nele , Vera Röhm , Ottmar Hörl or Werner Pokorny , as well as younger artists have presented their works here. The city is in a very central location in terms of road technology. It is very well connected to the road network by 2 federal highways:
- The B 44 Frankfurt <-> Mannheim running from northeast to southwest , which connects to Groß-Gerau in the southwest;
- The west to east running B 486 from Rüsselsheim to near Eppertshausen , which connects in the east to Langen and in the west to Rüsselsheim.
The B 44 also connects the two districts of Mörfelden and Walldorf on its east side, while the B 486 runs through the southern district of Mörfelden.

- Around 1.6 km southwest of the outskirts of Mörfelden, the K 164 branches off from the B 44 to Worfelden and thus also offers connections to other parts of Büttelborn .

Public transportation

In 2017, the smallest amounts of trace substances were detected in groundwater for the first time, including a. Residues from pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Their concentration is harmless and lies below all limit and orientation values of the Federal Environment Agency. It has only recently become possible to measure such concentrations. The residues come from the sewage treatment plant in Langen.
