The Association League Southwest is the top division of the Southwest German Football Association , one of the 21 regional associations of the German Football Association . The association league currently represents the 6th division in the German football league system . The league has its catchment area in the southern part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . The next higher division is the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar , which is organized by the Football Regional Association Southwest and operated as Oberliga Südwest until the 2011/12 season. Below the Association League Southwest, two national leagues function as the seventh division, which are divided into a season west (football districts West Palatinate, Nahe) and a season east (football districts Vorderpfalz and Rheinhessen).
On the 6th level of men's football, 18 clubs from the Rhineland League (northern part of Rhineland-Palatinate) and 18 clubs from the Saarland League play parallel to the 16 clubs in the Südwest Association .

history
The league was introduced under the name "Amateur League Southwest" for the 1952/53 season after the amateur leagues Rheinhessen , West Palatinate and Front Palatinate were merged. At that time it represented the substructure for the 2nd Southwest League and was therefore third-class in the overall league hierarchy. The same was true after the introduction of the Regionalliga Südwest as the second highest division. From the season 1974/75, the league acted as a substructure for the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga , with the Südwestmeister determined against the champions of the Amateur League Rhineland and the Amateur League Saar in a promotion round a climber in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga. From the 1978/79 season, the Oberliga Südwest was (re) introduced as the highest amateur division. The division was renamed "Verbandsliga Südwest" and was only fourth class from that point on. The master rose in each case to the league. Since the introduction of the third-tier regional leagues in the 1994/95 season, the Verbandsliga Südwest only represented the fifth highest division and after the introduction of the third division from the 2008/09 season only the sixth highest level in German league football.
