Agnieszka Roma Radwańska ( listen ? / I ) (born March 6, 1989 in Krakow ) is a former Polish tennis player . Like her younger sister Urszula Radwańska, she played for Nadwiślan Kraków (Krakow). In 2005 at Wimbledon and in 2006 at the French Open , she won the junior title. Radwańska's greatest sporting success was winning the 2015 WTA Championships . Audio file / audio sample

Career

2005-2007

In 2005 she won the Wimbledon tournament in the junior women competition when she defeated Tamira Paszek 6: 3 and 6: 4 in the final.

In May 2006 she first drew attention to herself on the professional tour when she defeated Anastassija Myskina in three sets in the first round of the Tier II tournament in Warsaw and only failed in the quarter-finals to Jelena Dementjewa . On June 11, she won the French Open for Juniors without losing a set , when she defeated Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova 6: 4, 6: 1 in the final. She then received a wildcard for the main draw at Wimbledon. When she made her debut in the women's competition, she was only the second Pole in tournament history to reach the round of 16, but was defeated by the later semi-finalist Kim Clijsters . In August she qualified for the main field of the US Open , where she failed in the second round to Tatiana Golovin . In September, after surviving the qualification at the Tier II tournament in Luxembourg , she eliminated the former number one, Venus Williams , and the first placed Jelena Dementjewa and moved into the semifinals, in which she was defeated by Francesca Schiavone . She finished the year at position 57 in the WTA world rankings . In March 2007, Radwańska received the WTA award for best newcomer of 2006 for her seasonal performance .

In the 2007 season it only reached its previous year's form in Indian Wells. In the encounter against the favorite Lucie Šafářová , Radwańska missed three match points and lost 3: 6, 7: 6 2 , 6: 7 4 . In Miami , she defeated Shenay Perry (6: 2, 6: 1) and Zheng Jie (6: 3, 6: 4) without any problems. In round three she lost a 4-2 lead in the first set against former world number one Martina Hingis , won the second with an offensive and varied game and was clearly the stronger in the third set; they defeated number 6 in the world with 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2. After further good results, Radwańska achieved her breakthrough in July when she won her first WTA tournament in Stockholm without losing a set. In the final, she clearly defeated Wera Duschewina 6: 1, 6: 1. At the US Open she achieved a small sensation when she threw Marija Sharapova , who was second in the tournament, out of the tournament in the third round . Radwańska finished the year in 26th place in the WTA world rankings.

2008-2010

After a failed start to the 2008 season in Hobart, she reached her first quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open , after defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrowa . Shortly thereafter, she won her second WTA title in Pattaya . After good results at the Tier I tournaments in Doha (semi-finals) and in Indian Wells (quarter-finals), she also won the WTA tournament in Istanbul , where she defeated Jelena Dementjewa 6: 3, 6: 2 in the final. The prize money she had won by then exceeded the $ 1 million mark. She was the first Polish tennis player to do this. At the French Open , she made it to the round of 16 for the first time. After an injury-related cancellation in Birmingham , she started the grass season with her greatest success to date: she won the tournament in Eastbourne with a final victory over Nadja Petrowa. In Wimbledon she reached the second quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament with a dramatic three-set victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova. In the sixth meeting of the two, this was the second victory for Radwańska - again at the Grand Slam level. On July 7th she was listed in the top ten for the first time.

In the 2009 season, Radwańska confirmed the achievements achieved in the previous year and finished the season again as tenth in the world rankings.

At the US hard court tournaments she achieved remarkable results again in 2010: she lost the final in San Diego to Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the semi-finals in Indian Wells , Dubai and Stanford she was defeated by Caroline Wozniacki , Wiktoryja Asaranka and Maria Sharapova and in the quarter-finals in Miami and Montreal failed it to Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova. With the move into the round of 16 at Wimbledon , in which she drew the short straw against Li Na in two sets, she achieved her best result in a Grand Slam tournament. She had to cancel the rest of the season because of a broken toe.

2011-2013

2011 after her victory in Tokyo

At her first tournament in 2011, the Australian Open , she lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual winner Kim Clijsters 3: 6, 6: 7 4 . In Doha the quarterfinals ended against Svetlana Kuznetsova. Until the round of 16 she came in Indian Wells (defeat against Asaranka) and later in Roland Garros (against Sharapova). At the lawn tournament in Eastbourne, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the later Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová . At Wimbledon itself, she had to admit defeat to Petra Cetkovská in round two . The hard court season began at the WTA tournament in Stanford with a quarter-finals (loss to Sabine Lisicki ). In San Diego , after Siegen a. a. over Andrea Petkovic and Vera Swonarjowa finally winning the title, it was her fifth on the tour. With final victories over Swonaryova and Petković, the titles number six and seven followed in Tokyo and Beijing .

In 2012 she failed in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open against the eventual winner Wiktoryja Asaranka with 7: 6, 0: 6, 2: 6. In Dubai she defeated Julia Görges in the final . Radwańska celebrated the second tournament victory of the year in Miami, where she defeated Sharapova in two sets in the final. Before the French Open, she secured the next title when she defeated Simona Halep 7: 5, 6: 0 in the final in Brussels . In Roland Garros she had to admit surprisingly clearly defeat in round three of the regained Svetlana Kuznetsova. In Wimbledon , Radwańska then moved into the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. She was defeated by Serena Williams 1: 6, 7: 5, 2: 6, but achieved her best ranking so far with second place in the WTA world rankings. At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London, she led the Polish delegation as the flag bearer. In the tournament she then unexpectedly failed due to Julia Görges. At the WTA Championships in Istanbul, she reached the semifinals with two wins in the group matches over Petra Kvitová and Sara Errani , in which she lost to Serena Williams in straight sets.

In 2013 Radwańska won WTA titles in Auckland , Sydney and Seoul . In Auckland she won the final against Yanina Wickmayer and in Sydney against Dominika Cibulková . She finished both tournaments without losing a set. At the Australian Open, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Li Na. At the tournaments in Doha and Miami, she reached the semi-finals. In Doha she had to admit defeat to Asaranka and in Miami she was defeated by Serena Williams in two sets. In April she competed with the Polish team in the Fed Cup against Belgium and won both of their games. At the French Open , she was eliminated in the quarterfinals in a close match (final score: 6: 4 and 7: 6 6 ) against Sara Errani. At Wimbledon she made it to the semi-finals, where she lost to Sabine Lisicki in three sets with 4: 6, 6: 2, 7: 9. After the tournament she was in fourth place in the world rankings. In Stanford she reached the final, in which she lost to Dominika Cibulková after winning the first set. In Carlsbad and later in Tokyo she reached the quarter-finals (defeats to Samantha Stosur and Angelique Kerber ). In Cincinnati she could not start her quarterfinal match against Li Na. At the tournaments in Toronto and Beijing, she had to admit defeat in the semifinals Serena Williams. At the US Open, she was eliminated in the round of 16. The consistently good year ended without a major tournament victory.

2014-2018

At the Australian Open she reached the semi-finals in 2014 by knocking Asaranka out of the tournament in the quarter-finals. At the tournament in Doha she reached the semi-finals for the third time in a row, which she lost in two sets against the eventual winner Simona Halep. In Indian Wells she moved into the final, but was subject to Flavia Pennetta there . At the tournament in Miami she lost 6: 3, 6: 7, 3: 6 against Dominika Cibulková in the quarter-finals. In Madrid she made it to the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by Sharapova. At the French Open , she was surprisingly eliminated in the third round against Ajla Tomljanović . At Wimbledon she had to admit defeat to Ekaterina Makarova in the round of 16 . At the Rogers Cup , she won her first title of the season when she defeated Venus Williams in the final 6-4 and 6-2. At the following WTA tournament in Cincinnati , she narrowly failed in the quarterfinals to Caroline Wozniacki . At the US Open , she lost in the second round to the later semi-finalist Peng Shuai . In December it was announced that Martina Navrátilová would be part of Radwańska's coaching team.

The year 2015 began with her compatriot Jerzy Janowicz at the Hopman Cup in Perth. In the preliminary round she won two of her three individual and all mixed games. They reached the final against the USA , which they won 2-1 and so Poland secured victory in this team competition for the first time. At the Australian Open she lost 3: 6, 6: 2, 1: 6n Venus Williams in the round of 16. At the French Open she lost 2: 6, 6: 3, 1: 6 to Annika Beck in the first round . After mixed first half of the season, she moved into the final at the grass tournament in Eastbourne , in which she was defeated by Belinda Bencic in three sets; She lost the third set 0: 6. In Wimbledon Radwańska was then for the third time in the semi-finals, which she lost to Garbiñe Muguruza . By reaching the semi-finals, she returned to the top 10 in the world rankings. In Flushing Meadows she failed in the third round with 3: 6, 2: 6 to Madison Keys . She celebrated her first WTA title in 2015 at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she defeated Belinda Bencic 6: 2, 6: 2 in the final. At the WTA Tour Championships , she moved into the semifinals after just one victory (over top seed Simona Halep) from the group games. There she defeated Garbiñe Muguruza 6: 7 5 , 6: 3, 7: 5. Finally, she also won the final against Petra Kvitová 6: 2, 4: 6, 6: 3.

In 2016 Radwańska started winning the title in Shenzhen , where she defeated Alison Riske 6: 3, 6: 2 in the final. Two weeks later she reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open . In the following weeks she also reached the semi-finals in Doha , Indian Wells and Stuttgart . At the French Open Radwańska reached the last sixteen, where she failed after several interruptions in the rain to Zwetana Pironkowa . In Wimbledon she also reached the round of 16, in which she lost to Dominika Cibulková 3: 6, 7: 5, 7: 9. The second title win of the year celebrated in New Haven , after they defeated Elina Switolina 6-1 and 7-6 in the final. At the US Open , she did not get past the second round again. Her third and final title win of the season was in Beijing . She won the final against Johanna Konta 6: 4 and 6: 2. Due to the consistently good season performance, she qualified for the WTA Championships . There she reached the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by Angelique Kerber .

At the start of the 2017 season, Radwańska made it to the finals in Sydney . There she had to admit defeat to Johanna Konta.

On November 14, 2018, Radwanska announced her retirement from professional sports because she could no longer play at the level she was used to.

Private life

Radwańska comes from a family of athletes. Her grandfather Władysław was a hockey player at Cracovia Kraków . Her father Robert Piotr Radwański, who also coached her and her sister, played tennis at KS Nadwiślan Kraków. Mother Marta takes care of the finances of her daughters as an accountant. Her younger sister Urszula is also a tennis player, both have already played in the same tournaments and competed against each other.

Born in Kraków, she spent her first years in Gronau , Germany, where her father was a tennis coach at TV Grün-Gold . In June 2007 she graduated from high school.

On July 22, 2017, she married her long-time friend and training partner in Poland. In July 2020 Radwańska gave birth to their first child together.
