history

Until the 19th century

In the Celtic times, a Celtic oppidum of around 200 hectares was created in the triangle between Wagensteigbach and Rotbach , which is mentioned by the ancient geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century as a tarodunum . This name for the settlements of the Dreisamtal is also preserved after the Alemannic conquest after 260, an indication of a continuous settlement history. The Celtic name Tarodunon (Latin Tarodunum ) is - after the (old) High German sound shift from t to z in the 7th century - mentioned again as Zarduna 765 in a document of the St. Gallen monastery , but the medieval places are Zarten and Kirchzarten is no longer on the site of the Celtic oppidum. In the High Middle Ages, Kirchzarten came under the rule of the Lords of Falkenstein . Around 1500 the then Austrian city of Freiburg im Breisgau acquired rule over Kirchzarten. After the Peace of Nijmegen in 1679, Austria ceded control of Freiburg, including fiefs and Kirchzartens, to France , so that Kirchzarten then became part of the French province of Alsace. After the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697, Freiburg, Kirchzarten and Lehen fell back to Austria.

At the end of 1805, as a result of the Peace of Pressburg , Kirchzarten came to the Grand Duchy of Baden after the Battle of Austerlitz, which Austria had lost against Napoleon, and was assigned to the Freiburg II district office.

Churches

  • The parish church of St. Gallus points to the early possessions of the St. Gallen monastery . The church originated in the 12th century when church life shifted from Zarten to Kirch zarten. The church has Romanesque , Gothic and Baroque elements (interior). The organ from 1991 comes from the Swiss organ workshop Metzler Orgelbau . Storks have been nesting on the roof of the 32 m high church tower for several years .

  • The St. Johannes Chapel in Zarten , where a church is documented as early as the 9th century, goes back to a building that was built in the 11th century, but today it looks more like a Gothic one. It is considered to be the oldest still existing church in the Dreisamtal. The roof turret and the sacristy date from 1878. The interior has a baroque interior. The chapel is surrounded by a garden, which is intended to be reminiscent of the tradition of farm and monastery gardens with its planting.
  • The Jakobuskapelle on the Jakobsweg on the Hofgut Himmelreich was probably built before 1500. It had to give way to the new roads twice and has been in its current location since 1986.
