The 2001/02 DEL season was the eighth season of the German Ice Hockey League . The regular season began on September 7, 2001 and ended on March 17, 2002, the play-off round was played from March 22, 2002. The Cologne Sharks became German champions . In addition to the sporting relegation of Berlin Capitals , the license was withdrawn from the mosquitoes Essen and the Revierlöwen Oberhausen .

Mode and rules

The biggest change compared to the previous year is the reintroduction of sporting descent. While the best eight teams in the preliminary round qualified for the play-offs, the last two played in a play-down round against relegation. For the teams in places nine to 14, the season ended after the preliminary round.

The Berlin Capitals were thus determined to be relegated in sport, although the team was also refused the extension of the license. In addition, there were the Revierlöwen Oberhausen, who could not provide the required proof of a gaming venue, as well as the Mosquitos Essen, whose license was withdrawn due to the opening of insolvency proceedings .

Quarter finals

The quarter-finals were played from March 22, 2002. The best-placed team in the main round, the Munich Barons, met the eighth-placed Augsburg Panthers, the second-placed Adler Mannheim the Seventh Eisbären Berlin, the third, the Krefeld Penguins, the sixth-placed Kölner Haie and the fourth-placed Nürnberg Ice Tigers, as in the previous year Kassel Huskies, who had finished the main round again in fifth place.

The final series was played from April 12th. The Adler Mannheim had the first home right due to their better placement in the main round.
