Hargnies is a French commune with 484 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the arrondissement Charleville-Mézières , the canton Revin (until 2015: canton Fumay ) and the municipal association Ardenne, Rives de Meuse .

The place is located in an area of ​​4,000 hectares of forest, which makes it one of the most wooded communities in France. Hargnies is located in a clearing on the Ardennes plateau. Les Hézes d'Hargnies are at 492 meters one of the highest peaks in the Ardennes. The region is known for its bogs with rare peat moss and the blue pipe grass ( Molinia caerulea ) as well as a rare species of wild orchids ( Dactylorhiza sphagnicola ).

The municipality is located around 35 km north of the Charleville-Mézières prefecture and is part of the Ardennes Regional Nature Park, founded in 2011 . history

The existence of the village goes back to an edict of Louis the Pious in 837.

Hargnies and Haybes were ceded to France by the County of Namur in 1697 through the Peace of Rijswijk .

During the First World War , the place was occupied by German troops on August 24, 1914.

During the western campaign of the German Wehrmacht, the village was taken on May 13, 1940 by the 6th Panzer Division under the command of General Werner Kempf . On September 5, 1944, Hargnies was liberated by US troops.
