The district office of Obernburg was formed in 1862 through the merger of the regional courts of the older order Klingenberg and Obernburg .

On the occasion of the reform of the layout of the Bavarian district offices, the Obernburg am Main district office ceded the Wildensee community to the Marktheidenfeld district office and the Großheubach community to the Miltenberg district office on January 1, 1880 .

On January 1, 1939, the uniform imperial designation Landkreis was introduced. Thus the district office became the district of Obernburg am Main.

On July 1, 1972, the district of Obernburg am Main was dissolved as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . Almost all communities were added to the Miltenberg district, only Pflaumheim and Wenigumstadt (both now districts of Großostheim ) came to the Aschaffenburg district .
