Michael Jung (born July 31, 1982 in Bad Soden am Taunus ) is a German rider who has achieved his greatest successes in eventing . From 2012 to the 2014 World Equestrian Games, he was the first eventing rider to be Olympic champion, world and European champion in the individual standings at the same time. In 2016 he was again Olympic champion in the individual ranking. From April 2015 to March 2018 he held the leading position in the world rankings. Jung is a riding master .

Career

2014 at the International Whitsun Tournament Wiesbaden

In his youth Michael Jung was trained by his father Joachim Jung, himself a four-time national champion in eventing. After completing secondary school , Jung trained as a rider in his parents' riding stable in Horb -Altheim. In January 2010 he passed the master craftsman's examination as a master horse manager . He runs the training stable together with his parents. In 2002 he won the national competition for horse hosts in all categories. He gained his first major successes after his time as a young rider with the Trakehner stallion Grafenstolz TSF , who was sold to England in early 2009 .

For a long time his top horse was the gelding La Biosthetique Sam FBW , with whom he won the CCI **** and the bronze medal at the European Championships in Fontainebleau in Luhmühlen in 2009 . He also won the eventing World Cup final with Sam FBW in 2009. He reached a high point in his career when he and Sam FBW won the individual ranking of the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington on October 3, 2010 .

He was able to continue this success in 2011 at the European Championships in Luhmühlen : Here he won both team and individual gold with Sam FBW . This made Jung the third rider in history who was world and European champion in the individual standings at the same time (alongside Virginia Leng and Zara Phillips ).

In 2012 he continued his winning streak: In the 2012 Summer Olympics he took for the first time in the Olympic Games in part. Here, on his 30th birthday, he won the gold medal both with the team and in the individual. Jung was the first rider in the history of eventing to be Olympic, world and European champion in the individual standings at the same time.

In May 2013, Jung took part in the Badminton Horse Trials for the first time. Here Jung and Sam FBW were in the lead until the last jump of the final jumping competition, but had a mistake on this jump and thus finished second. It just missed the first German victory in the test that had been held since 1949. At the European Championships in 2013 he defended individual and team gold, he rode Halunke FBW here .

Since his show horse Sam kur was out of action before the 2014 World Equestrian Games due to an inflammation in the front hoof, Jung started there with his mare fischerRocana FST . With the German team he won the world championship title and took silver in the individual standings behind team mate Sandra Auffarth . The German eventing team was therefore currently Olympic, European and world champions at that time.

After Jung won the Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington with Rocana and took third place with Sam , he was first in the world rankings at the end of April 2015. With the Burghley Horse Trials he won another competition of the highest category with Sam in September . Shortly afterwards he became European champion for the third time in a row, both individually and with the team , this time with Takinou , the youngest horse in the competition.

With victories in the 4 * eventing events at Burghley 2015, Lexington 2016 and Badminton 2016, he became the second rider to win the Grand Slam of eventing . He also won the overall ranking of the 2016 FEI Classics season.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Jung auf Sam again won the gold medal in the individual, plus silver with the German team. After Charles Pahud de Mortanges and Mark Todd, he is the third rider to be individual Olympic champion at two Summer Olympics in a row, all three of whom achieved this with the same horse at both Olympic Games.

Due to an injury to Rocana , Jung had to cancel his participation in the 2018 World Equestrian Games . In spring he had finished second with the mare in Lexington .

In addition to eventing, Jung also competes in show jumping and dressage tests up to advanced level. At the Stuttgart German Masters 2010, for example, he won the indoor derby for eventing riders, two national dressage tests and an international time jumping test. There were other successes in show jumping, such as the victory in the Championships of Balve 2015. In 2017 Jung participated in more than ten international show jumping tournaments up to the CSI 5 * part and came in with more than one million Swiss francs doped Grand Prix of Geneva under the best third. At the traditional Westfalenhallen horse show 2019, Jung won four tests, including the highly endowed Grand Prix of the Federal Republic.
