history
After the originally planned settlement of the Prussian university in the city of Cologne failed, it was opened in 1870 as the "Royal Rhenish-Westphalian Polytechnic School in Aachen". This was largely thanks to important Aachen personalities, including the later statesman Friedrich von Kühlwetter , the insurance entrepreneur Friedrich Adolph Brüggemann , the president of the commercial court Johann Arnold Bischoff , the secret councilor Leopold Scheibler , the spinning mill owner Johann Friedrich Pastor and the director of the Rhenania chemical factory in Stolberg Friedrich Wilhelm Hasenclever , who from 1858 as the " private committee for the establishment of a polytechnic school in Aachen " had significantly advocated, helped plan and supported the construction of the new polytechnic, so that the foundation stone was finally laid on May 15, 1865. In addition to this, the university received a state premium in 1870, a guarantee fund of 1.3 million marks and a construction cost subsidy of another million marks, plus 10,000 thalers annually as earmarked subsidies from the Aachen Association for the Promotion of Labor . This money originally came from half the profit of the Aachener und Münchener Feuerversicherungsgesellschaft, later AachenMünchener and today's Generali Deutschland , which, in the sense of David Hansemann , was to be used for educational and social purposes through this sponsoring association. In the main building at the Templergraben, around 32 lecturers initially taught around 223 students. Right from the start, there was also a painting professorship, which was located in the architecture department, held the position (one after the other): Franz Reiff , Alexander Frenz , August von Brandis , Hermann Haas .
In 1880 the polytechnic school, headed by a director, became a "technical college" with a rectorate constitution. In 1899 the Prussian Institutes of Technology as part of the centenary of the Berlin Institute of Technology received by Emperor Wilhelm II. Until then only the universities entitled Promotion right to award an independent doctoral degree in engineering, abbr .: " Dr.-Ing. ". The granting of the right to award doctorates to the technical universities represented an essential step in the emancipation of the technical universities compared to the traditional universities.
The First World War meant a serious setback, but from 1925 to 1932 there was a section of prosperity and growth. The old student numbers were reached again and new buildings were built.
During the period of National Socialism as other universities also - - (1933-1945), RWTH was politically into line , which met at the Aachen university members on comparatively little resistance. The freedom of teaching and research was restricted, leading lecturers were withdrawn from teaching and many students had to leave the RWTH. Because of its proximity to the border with the Netherlands and Belgium , the university was closed for a year during the Second World War .
Immediately after the war, the RWTH continued teaching. New non-technical faculties emerged in 1965 for philosophy and 1966 for medicine . This is how the once purely technical university became a university. 1980 founded as a teacher training college 1946 College of Education Aachen incorporated. While other federal German technical universities (TH) renamed themselves technical universities (TU) , the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, consciously preserving its roots from the polytechnic movement, has retained the traditional name as a technical university.
After the first two post-war decades, in which the young Federal Republic often suppressed its totalitarian past, it came about in 1970 that Hans Schwerte, the former SS officer Hans Ernst Schneider, was elected and appointed rector, whose Nazi past was only actively involved in 1995 was uncovered by historians of the RWTH, first and foremost Klaus Schwabe .
On September 22, 1965, a nuclear research reactor was put into operation at the RWTH in the Burtscheid district . This Siemens teaching reactor had a thermal output of 0.1 watts. The reactor was shut down in 2002 and decommissioned in October 2008. In 2010, an application was made for closure.

Status, numbers and facts
The university is a state university in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . RWTH Aachen University has 9 faculties, 260 institutes, 7 Collaborative Research Centers and Transregios, 7 participations in SFBs and Transregio SFBs as well as 27 graduate programs - including 10 DFG graduate colleges. The university is an employer for 9,335 employees: 539 professors, 5,355 scientific and 2,749 non-scientific employees, 692 trainees and interns. The university is the largest employer in the Aachen city region .
In the 2015/2016 winter semester, 44,517 students, with almost 32% women, were enrolled in 152 courses. The university thus has the most technical courses in Germany. In the 2015/16 winter semester, 9,843 new students (in the 1st semester) began their studies, 6,582 of them with a bachelor's degree, teaching qualification or state examination in medicine / dentistry and 3,261 with a master's degree. In the 2015 academic year (winter semester 2014/15 and summer semester 2015) 6,423 students completed their studies.
Of the students, 18% are international students, mainly from the People's Republic of China (almost 1,300 students), India and Turkey (with more than 700 and 600 students respectively). RWTH has a total of 7,904 foreign students from 128 countries.
The students are distributed among the scientific areas as follows: 57% study an engineering subject, 23% a mathematics and natural science subject, 13% a subject in the humanities, social and economic sciences and 7% a subject in medicine and dentistry. The annual budget of the university (including the medical faculty) was EUR 868.7 million in 2015. Around 337 million euros of this are so-called third-party funds, i.e. grants for research projects from public and industrial clients. As a university, RWTH Aachen receives the highest third-party funding in Germany; According to the Federal Statistical Office, RWTH Aachen University (excluding medical facilities) is raising 790,800 euros (2012) per professorship.
Since 1984, entrepreneurs from the university sector have been able to set up more than 500 mostly technology-oriented companies inside and outside of the region’s start-up and service centers that have since emerged. To date, more than 4,000 jobs have been created directly in promising areas, to which another 4,000 indirectly created jobs in the supplier companies must be added.
This trend is supported by a start-up center established in 2000. As part of the already existing cooperation agreement with the Aachen Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Aachen Chamber of Crafts, the Aachen Start-Up Region was shaped in this context, which supports young university graduates with a variety of measures to help them set up their companies. In addition, a number of foreign companies are settling in Aachen due to its proximity to the university: Ericsson , Ford , United Technologies and Microsoft have set up research laboratories in Aachen.
In addition to this regional integration, the university is expanding its international contacts in science and business. A total of 70 partnerships are contractually fixed. Every year around 100 institutes from all departments are involved in EU projects. Study programs and accreditation agreements with other universities allow RWTH students to complete parts of their training abroad. RWTH offers 14 English-language master's programs.
criticism
Civil Clause and Arms Research
As at other German universities, a public discussion on the pros and cons of a civil clause was held in Aachen in 2012 and 2013 . According to a report in the Aachener Zeitung from October 2012, RWTH Rector Schmachtenberg spoke out against arms research , but also against a civil clause, because arms research at RWTH is not relevant anyway.
In September 2012, the RWTH re-established the "Chair for Technology Analysis and Foresight in the Field of Security Research" at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In September 2012, chair holder Michael Lauster also took over the management of the Fraunhofer Institute for Natural Science, which focuses on armaments research. Technical trend analyzes INT in Euskirchen has taken over. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft wrote in a press release: "Appointing the newly established chair of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the renowned Aachen University offers attractive new opportunities for budding young scientists at the Euskirchen location too". The creation of this chair and the associated “strategic partnership” between INT and RWTH was also the subject of a small inquiry from the DIE LINKE parliamentary group in the German Bundestag with regard to military research at INT.
In November 2013, NDR reported on RWTH research for the US Department of Defense . RWTH refused to provide NDR with any information on research partners and third-party funded projects. In December 2013, RWTH Rector Schmachtenberg emphasized in a meeting of the RWTH student parliament that the projects funded by the Pentagon were basic research and not armaments research. He also felt that the discussion initiated by the NDR coverage was a “political campaign”. One of the three Pentagon projects carried out at RWTH Aachen University is called "Non Toxic Insect Resistant Textiles for Military Clothing" (German: "Non-toxic insect-repellent textiles for military clothing", volume 99,970 US dollars).
The Aachen Peace Prize sharply criticized the RWTH's position on armaments research. In particular , the Aachen Peace Prize described the dual-use problem cited by RWTH Aachen University as a "playing hide and seek" when research contracts were awarded and paid for by the Pentagon, as in the present case.
Acquiring third-party funding
The university is setting records for third-party funding. Among other things, the marketing of a RWTH lecture hall to Trivago has been criticized by students.
campus
RWTH is not a campus university . Instead, their buildings are spread over three core areas: northwest of the city center, on the Hörn and in Melaten. The student dormitories are spread across all three areas.
Central area
The majority is located in a contiguous area in the northwestern part of the city center between the city center and Westbahnhof . This central campus on the Templergraben includes the historic main building and the SuperC service center with student administration and central examination office, the main cafeteria and most of the lecture halls, including the Audimax and Kármán Auditorium . A large part of the administration and most of the dean's offices of the individual faculties, for example mechanical engineering and economics , are also located in the central area. The CARL lecture hall building was opened on 14,000 square meters in the 2016/2017 winter semester. The Kármán Auditorium has been closed since the summer semester 2017 . Further use as a lecture hall building is currently not planned.
In addition, several dozen chairs or institutes are located in the central area of the university: English studies, architecture, building history, mining, chemistry, some electrical engineering, educational science, geography, German studies, metallurgy, art history, plastics technology, aerospace technology, mathematics, materials science, metallurgy , Philosophy, Raw Materials, Romance Studies, Sociology, Linguistics and Communication Science, Technical Combustion, Heat and Mass Transfer, Economics, Economic Geography and Economic and Social History.
Horn, Melaten, Burtscheid
The second area is Campus West between Aachen West station and Hörn with IT, political science, biology (partially), electrical engineering (partially), economics (partially), metallurgy (partially) and civil engineering. This part of the campus will be greatly expanded by the second section of the campus project by around 2020. To enable the construction of Campus West, Deutsche Bahn has de-dedicated its former areas and dismantled the track systems and buildings. On January 15, 2015, part of the railway site became the property of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
After all, the Melaten campus is home to biology (partly), chemistry (partly), physics, electrical engineering (partly) and numerous institutes such as B. the Institute for Motor Vehicles Aachen and the Institute for Textile Technology of the RWTH Aachen. The university clinic with the medical faculty and the cafeteria Vita are in the immediate vicinity . In the northern part of Seffent , the first part of the campus project will be built from the end of 2010 , which is later to border on the second section.
The Institute for Psychology is located in the southern district of Burtscheid , together with the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) and the Institute for Crystallography (ifk) . Some offices are also located directly at the city theater next to the branch of the Cologne University of Music and Dance .
Fire in the old machine hall of the WZL
In the late evening of February 4, 2016 at around 11 p.m., a fire broke out in the machine hall of the WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen University in Steinbachstrasse on the Melaten campus. In the fire, the approximately 3500 square meter hall including the high-quality machines as well as research results and part of the IT infrastructure of the RWTH was destroyed. According to initial estimates, the material damage amounts to more than 100 million euros. All research results were saved except for those of the last few days. Those in charge of the machine tool laboratory estimate the time for the reconstruction to be 18 to 24 months. The fire brigade needed up to 160 men and several hours to completely extinguish the fire. The fire fighting continued until the afternoon of February 5, with two firefighters slightly injured.
How the fire started could no longer be determined due to the complete destruction of the hall.
External institutions
The RWTH has external facilities outside the Aachen city area in the Jülich Research Center , in the House of Technology in Essen and, together with the University of Stuttgart, owns a house in the Kleinwalsertal in the Allgäu Alps . The RWTH also owns the Wildenhof water sports area in the Eifel .
Planning science campus
In a press release in August 2007, RWTH Aachen announced that it was planning a science campus. Campus Melaten is to be built on 473,000 square meters as a center for research institutes and industrial companies. This is to consist of eleven research clusters and six starter clusters, which have been implemented since 2009. On February 18, 2010, the groundbreaking ceremony was held by Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and the RWTH Rector, Ernst Schmachtenberg , as well as other representatives from the state and federal government. The investment volume will amount to 750 million euros until around 2015. To advance these purposes, the RWTH Aachen Campus GmbH was founded. RWTH Aachen has a 95% stake in this company and the City of Aachen 5%. The company's task is to supervise and design the construction and later also the administration and marketing of the campus.

Tuition fees
tuition fee
RWTH Aachen is a university in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia . On March 21, 2006, the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament decided on the legal basis for the collection of general tuition fees under the designation “HRAG - Law to ensure fair financing in higher education”. The universities were free to decide whether and to what extent they would charge tuition fees. The maximum amount was limited to 500 euros per semester.
On June 19, 2006, the RWTH Senate passed a corresponding statute of contributions. Since the winter semester 2006/07 all freshmen and since the summer semester 2007 all students had to pay tuition fees in the maximum permitted amount of 500 euros. The general tuition fees replace the study account model.
The tuition fees were to be used exclusively to improve teaching and study conditions. 50% of the tuition fees collected went directly to the faculties, which they could use for independent initiatives, a further 25% were distributed to the faculties based on applications and 25% went centrally to the university for higher-level measures. The appropriate and transparent use of the tuition fees was monitored by a review committee, in which students were also involved and could participate.
In the course of the red-green minority government in North Rhine-Westphalia, the tuition fees were abolished again for the 2011/12 winter semester. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is replacing € 19 million of the previous € 22 million income from tuition fees.

Student body and social contribution
The student body and social contribution ( semester contribution ) to be paid per semester is 285.02 euros in the 2019/2020 winter semester. The contribution consists of the social contribution to the student union (88 euros) and the student body contribution (197.02 euros). The student body fee is divided into three parts: 9.39 euros for the AStA and 187.52 euros for the semester ticket . The latter includes 127.92 euros for ASEAG , 54.60 euros for the NRW expansion and 5 euros to Arriva for the expansion to the Dutch province of South Limburg . From the contribution to the AStA, 5 euros are freely available, the rest for the student aid fund (0.01 euros) and the contribution hardship fund (0.10 euros).

Equal Opportunities Officer at RWTH Aachen
In 1981, the establishment of an autonomous women’s project was decided at a women's plenary meeting at RWTH Aachen University, and the call for the establishment of a so-called “women’s consultant” was officially articulated for the first time. Nevertheless, it was not until 1991 that the office of women's representative was introduced at RWTH Aachen University and Brigitte Gilles was elected as the university's first women's representative. After her retirement in 1994, Marlies Diepelt took over this honorary position, followed by Doris Klee from 2010 and Ulrike Brands-Proharam Gonzales since 2011. With the entry into force of the State Equal Opportunities Act in 2014, this voluntary activity was renamed "Equal Opportunities Officer ".
While at the beginning it was all about women's issues such as the promotion of women in scientific topics as well as the improvement of childcare and the possibility of part-time employment for women at the university, later, within the framework of gender mainstreaming, the equality of women and men came to reduce existing disadvantages and improvements in the work-life balance.
RWTH Aachen supports these projects by awarding the women's advancement prize, which has been awarded annually in two categories since 2000 and was renamed the Brigitte Gilles Prize in memory of the first women's representative .
