Bellemagny ( German Baronsweiler , Alsatian Baretswiller ) is a French commune with 190 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Altkirch and the canton Masevaux and is a member of the community association Sud Alsace Largue .
geography
The municipality of Bellemagny is located in the area of the Burgundian Gate and borders the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . In the village the Steinbach flows into the Traubach , which drains via the Largue to the Ill and thus belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The Rhine-Rhône watershed runs immediately west of Bellemagny .
Neighboring communities are Eteimbes and Bretten in the north, Sternenberg in the east, Guevenatten in the southeast, Saint-Cosme in the south and Vauthiermont in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the Austrian rule of Belfort, then to the Grafschaft Pfirt until the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 . From 1800 to 1870 the municipality belonged to the Arrondissement Belfort. It was followed by the time when Alsace belonged to the German Empire until 1918. During the German occupation in World War II , the place was again part of the municipality of Saint-Cosme . After becoming independent in 1944, Bellemagny received its own parish .

Attractions
- In 1851 the pastor Joseph Alois Faller founded the Order of Benedictine Sisters of Adoration in Bellemagny . The monastery is the mother house of the order. It is a pilgrim hostel on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . The nuns also run an old people's home in the community.
