The Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging , in German-speaking commonly known as Club Brugge and rarely, as Club Bruges called, is a football club from the Belgian city of Bruges . It was founded on November 13th, 1891 and is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Belgium. In the city of Bruges it is by far the most popular club next to the Cercle Bruges . The club plays its home games in the Jan Breydel Stadium, which holds 29,062 spectators .

history

Club Bruges rose to the first Belgian football league in 1959. Under the successful Austrian coach Ernst Happel , he made it into the final of the UEFA Cup in 1976 and two years later in the European Cup . But the club lost each time to the British club Liverpool . In 1988 they made it to the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup again, but the club lost to Espanyol Barcelona . Club Bruges also failed in the semifinals in 1992, this time in the European Cup Winners' Cup against eventual winners Werder Bremen . In 1992/93, 2002/03, 2003/04 and 2005/06, Club Bruges entered the Champions League . In the 2011/12 season, the German coach Christoph Daum led the club to the runner-up. Georges Leekens replaced Christoph Daum in the coaching bench in the summer of 2012, but was released again in November. Successor was Juan Carlos Garrido, who signed a contract until the end of the season with the option for a further year. In September 2013 Garrido was replaced by the former Belgian national goalkeeper Michel Preud'homme , who in June 2017 by the Croatian former midfielder Ivan Leko .

With the expiration of the contract at the end of the 2018/19 season, Leko and Club Bruges agreed not to extend the coaching contract. On May 24, 2019, the club announced the signing of its former player and assistant coach Philippe Clement as a new coach for three years from the 2019/20 season.

Club Brugge finished the main round of the 2018/19 season in second place, seven points behind the leaders, KRC Genk . Accordingly, three points would have had to be made up for the championship title in the play-off round, which did not succeed. Club Brugge also finished the play-off round in second place. This meant that the club was eligible to take part in the third qualifying round of the Champion League . With victories over Dynamo Kiev and ASK Linz , qualification for the group stage of the Champion League was achieved. The Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul , the French club Paris St. Germain and the Spanish club Real Madrid were drawn into the group of Club Bruges .

Club Bruges is one of the most popular football clubs in Belgium and has a nationwide following. A large part of his organized fans are united in the Blue Army .

The largest hooligan group is called Brugge Casual Firm and was formed during the 1999/00 season. She is also known by her initials BCF.

Friendships

There is a long-standing friendship with ADO Den Haag . The first evidence of this connection at the hooligan level is found in 1989, when the North Side of The Hague played the hooligans of Club Brugge (then known as the East Side ) in the away game of the first round of the 1989/90 UEFA Cup against FC Twente Enschede supported and caused serious riots. Since then there have been more frequent reciprocal visits when Club Bruges met in risk games against Royal Antwerp , RSC Anderlecht or Standard Liège or Den Haag in similar matches against Ajax Amsterdam or Feyenoord Rotterdam .

There are also friendly contacts with Birmingham City , which arose when the two clubs met in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League .

Enmities

The biggest rivalry is with RSC Anderlecht , the Belgian record champions. The team from Brussels has dominated the Belgian league since the end of the Second World War , while Club Brugge was successful for the first time (after an early success in 1920) in the 1972/73 season, but temporarily overtook the team from Anderlecht in the further course of the 1970s expired. Since then, there has been the greatest national rivalry in Belgian club football between the two clubs. While Club Bruges is perceived as a traditional workers' club, RSC Anderlecht is more of a middle-class club. Serious riots occurred in a match held on January 29, 1984 in the Jan Breydel Stadium when a smoke bomb and a dart were thrown in the direction of Anderlecht's goalkeeper Jacky Munaron .

The biggest regional rivalry is the KAA Gent from the capital of the neighboring province of East Flanders (Bruges is the capital of West Flanders ) and their encounter is considered the Derby of Flanders .

The city derby in Bruges against Cercle is also important . While Club Bruges has embodied the Flemish community - and thus the majority of the population - from the very beginning, Cercle was seen as a representative of the French-speaking Catholic bourgeoisie in its early days. In terms of milieu, these were assigned to the upper classes, while Club Bruges mainly represented the working class.
