Nullification of honorary citizenship:

  • Adolf Hitler (honorary citizen from April 19, 1933 to September 17, 1984): Subsequent nullification by unanimous declaration by the City Council of Recklinghausen with the tenor that the Nazis and the undemocratic-dictatorial conditions forced the city of Recklinghausen into honorary citizenship in April 1933 and that thus “Adolf Hitler was never legally an honorary citizen of Recklinghausen. Anyone who was not legally an honorary citizen cannot and does not need to be denied honorary citizenship 39 years after his death. The City Council of Recklinghausen therefore [...] states that a criminal like Adolf Hitler was never an honorary citizen of Recklinghausen and is therefore not included in the list of honorary citizens in our city. "
