Olivet Bridge

Olivet is a French municipality with 21,951 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loiret in the region Center-Val de Loire .

geography

Olivet is south of Orléans . The commune, formerly called Saint-Martin-sur-Loiret , is crossed from east to west by the Loiret river.

history

The first villages were founded south of the Loiret river during the Merovingian era . Olivet was north of the river, in an area that was regularly flooded. Clovis I gave land to the villagers to found a monastery. The monks of the Abbey of Saint-Mesmin de Micy , the newly founded monastery, cultivated land, built dams and enabled viticulture. The Normans later destroyed most of the remains from the early Middle Ages, so little is known about this period. After the Normans withdrew in 911, the monks rebuilt the destroyed monastery. The Saint-Martin church was built towards the end of the 10th century . The 13th and early 14th centuries were calm. A stone bridge was built to improve trade with Orléans. During the Hundred Years War the place was devastated by the British. The monastery had to be rebuilt again. King Heinrich IV visited the place frequently. Olivet was badly affected by the Huguenot Wars . The townspeople were involved in the civil protests that broke out in Orléans in 1789. In 1790 André Cribier became the municipality's first mayor. In the 18th century the place flourished economically. The vineyards on the banks of the Loiret gradually gave way to gardens. From the second half of the 19th century, the Loiret was an important destination for the citizens of Orléans. During this time, the mills on the river gradually turned into hostels or houses. Olivet City Hall opened on July 14, 1887. In 1901 the place had 3,668 inhabitants. After a crisis caused by phylloxera, the vineyard was gradually increased again. The First World War affected many Olivet families. In 1921 a war memorial was inaugurated. In 1936 there were 4,050 people in Olivet. In 1941, Geneviève Perrier was the first woman to be a councilor. Marcel Belot, born in 1913 and killed on August 21, 1944, played a particularly decisive role in the resistance . The main street in the center of the village is named after him. In the period after the Second World War, the population increased sharply. The Americans set up a military base on the Maison Fort site , which they left in 1967. Large buildings were built in the 1960s due to the rapid population growth. In 1965 Route nationale 20 was diverted so that it no longer runs through the center of Olivet. In 1967 the Notre-Dame du Val church was consecrated. Many new public facilities were built in the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, Olivet was connected to the tram network of the Orléans metropolitan area. The new district of Le Larry was also built .
