Reichsstrasse (Austria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reichsstraße or Ärarialstraße (also Aerarial-Straße , ararian street ; from Latin Aerarium , 'public treasure', 'state treasure') was in imperial Austria, officially since 1867 in the kingdoms and countries represented in the Reichsrat , until 1918 the name for one of the state ( kk Ministry) maintained trunk road. Other names were Kaiserstraßen, Chausseen, Königswege, Herrenwege or state roads. These roads were built and maintained with the help of a partly self-operated, partly leased toll system, the income of which flowed into the “road fund” or “road construction fund”. Most recently, 1908–1918, the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Public Works was responsible for the imperial roads. Most of these were taken over by the subsequent nation states , in Austria in 1921 they became the federal highways that existed with interruption until 2002 , which today still carry the designation "B" after the administration was transferred to the federal states.

Opposite them were the “non-Ararian roads” (a term that lasted until the “Anschluss” of Austria in 1938). These were state roads maintained by the individual crown states / federal states , district roads maintained by the political districts and municipal roads established by municipalities, which in some crown states (e.g. Bohemia, Styria, Galicia, Carinthia, Carniola, Upper Austria, Salzburg) within their political districts were administered, while in other crown lands (Lower Austria, Moravia, Silesia, Istria, Görz-Gradiska) "street competition districts" were formed from the municipalities of the district court districts and the management was incumbent on a "district road committee".
