The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 111th time in 1995/96 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began in December 1995 and ended with the final on May 18, 1996 in Glasgow's Hampden Park . Defending champion Celtic Glasgow , who prevailed against second division Airdrieonians FC in the previous year's final, was eliminated in this year's semi-final against the eventual winners of the Glasgow Rangers in the Old Firm derby. With a 5-1 victory in the final over Heart of Midlothian , the Rangers were able to secure the 27th cup title in the club's history after their last cup victory in 1993 . It was the fourth consecutive defeat for Hearts after this year's and 1986 , 1976 and 1968 . The last cup victory of the capital city club was won in 1956 . By winning the cup and the championship , the Rangers were able to qualify as double winners for the 1996/97 Champions League season . As runners-Heart of Midlothian competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup season review 1996/97 .
