The Seine-Maritime [ sɛnmaʀitim ] is the French department with the atomic number 76. It is in the north of the country in the region Normandy and after the river Seine and its maritime named location.

geography

The Seine-Maritime department borders in the south on the Eure department , with which it formed the Haute-Normandie region, in the west and north on the English Channel and in the east on the Somme and Oise departments of the Hauts-de-France region .

The most important river is the Seine , which flows into the English Channel at Le Havre .

history

The department was founded in 1792 under the name Seine-Inférieure and consisted of the seven districts Cany , Caudebec-en-Caux , Dieppe , Gournay , Montivilliers , Neufchâtel , Rouen . In 1800 the arrondissements of Dieppe , Le Havre , Rouen , Neufchâtel and Yvetot were founded, the latter two were dissolved in 1926. In 1955 the department received its current name Seine-Maritime .

From 1960 to 2015 it belonged to the Haute-Normandie region , which became part of the Normandy region in 2016 .
