Selbitz is a town in the Upper Franconian district of Hof and is located in the Franconian Forest about 14 km west of the district town of Hof .

Place name

The place name is occupied with "Seilbitz" (1358), "Selbitz" (1367), "Selwitz" (1374), "Selwicz" and "Selbitz" (1386), "Selbicz" (1388), "Schelwitz" (1401) , "Selwitz" (1407), "Selwicz" (1421) and "Selbitz" (from the 15th century).

The name comes either from the name of the water Želvьnica (for turtle stream ), for which the West Slavic word Žely (for turtle ) served as the basis, or from the word Zělwina (for the green ). With this and because of the ending -itz , the place name is a relic of the Western Slavs , who settled in what is now Upper Franconia during a wave of settlements in the 6th century (subsequently also referred to as terra slavorum ).

history

Selbitz had been in the possession of the burgraves of Nuremberg since 1388 , who often passed the place on as a fief . The later office of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth , which had been in Prussia since 1792 , was granted market rights on May 16, 1783 . Selbitz had important magistrate rights. The market town fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 . On October 26, 1954, the Selbitz market was named town .

Thirty Years' War

Since Margrave Christian remained neutral in the first 13 years of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648), the area around Selbitz was largely spared from the war. In 1632 he made an alliance with the Swedish king Gustav Adolf , which brought the war to Selbitz. On October 11, 1632, the town church was set on fire by Croats , the rectory , the school and other houses and barns were also destroyed. In addition, the parish registers were lost.

Beer war between Naila and Selbitz

On April 11, 1778, the former Russian Selbitzer brewery was sold to the Naila bourgeois brewery cooperative without first informing the population. This meant that beer from Naila could also be delivered to Selbitz. When the first barrels were to be brought to Selbitz on April 13, 1778, the transport was initially stopped by General von Reitzenstein , owner of the second Selbitz brewery, Heinrich Beyer, mayor , and Georg Christoph Dittmar, jury and baker , but were later allowed to happen, whereby one barrel was delivered directly to the inn, the rest to a cellar. These were destroyed two days later by the mayor and the aldermen. When another delivery was on its way to Selbitz on April 24th, Beyer and Dittmar stopped this too, whereupon both were arrested, but were initially able to flee with the support of the local population. On May 6th, they were both arrested at home and taken to Hof for a trial. There they were each sentenced to six weeks in prison for damaging someone else's property , disobeying orders and wasting barley juice.

Although the people of Selbitz lost the trial and with it the beer war , beer from Naila is served at the home and meadow festival, which has been held annually since 1834, in the absence of an own brewery. At the festival since 1959, following the procession, the court hearing of children and young people has been reenacted on the town hall steps ( Wiesenfestspiel ).

Territorial reform

During the regional reform in Bavaria in the 1970s, four previously independent municipalities were incorporated into Selbitz (with Föhrighaus, Hüttungshaus, Kreuzbühl, Schertlas): Dörnthal (with Hüttung, Rothenbürg, Sellanger, Staudenhäuser, Stegenwaldhaus), Neuhaus (with Edlasmühle, Wachholderbusch) and Rodesgrün (with Kohlbühl) on April 1, 1971 and Weidesgrün on May 1, 1978. In addition, on July 1, 1976, parts of the neighboring communities of Köditz and Leupoldsgrün , each with less than 50 inhabitants at the time, were incorporated.

In the course of the district reform, the Naila district and Selbitz became part of the Hof district on July 1, 1972 .

Residents

The inhabitants are nicknamed "Bockpfeifer". This term originated approximately in the first half of the 19th century, as the Selbitz often than begging musicians in the area were on the road and doing a stand pipe (bagpipe) played. The name is often found in Selbitz, so there are z. B. a restaurant, a fan club, a hiking trail and the fountain at the town hall, whose name is part of the Bockpfeifer. The figure also appears in the city's coat of arms and in the title of the former home newspaper Der Selbitzer Bockpfeifer .
