- Washington, DC / United States : With the mediation of US President Barack Obama , Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas are resuming the two-year-long interrupted direct peace negotiations to resolve the Middle East conflict .

- Kinshasa / DR Congo : In two ship accidents in the past few days, at least 270 people were killed and more than 60 others were missing.

- Lakki Marwat / Pakistan : At least 19 people are killed and more than 45 others are injured in an attack by the Taliban on a police station in the north-west of the country.
- Milan / Italy : The one million Swiss francs doped Prize of the International Balzan Foundation for outstanding scientist was awarded to the German theater historian Manfred Brauneck , the Brazilian mathematician Jacob Palis , the Japanese biologist Shinya Yamanaka and the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg .
- Munich / Germany : In the trial for the death of the manager Dominik Brunner , the District Court I sentenced the two defendants to long imprisonment for murder and bodily harm resulting in death .

- Murmansk / Russia : President Dmitri Anatoljewitsch Medvedev and Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg sign an agreement to end the 40-year-old dispute over the common border in the Barents Sea and the Arctic . With this, both states agree on the division of a 176,000 km² area and the joint use of cross-border natural gas and oil reserves .
