- Washington, DC / United States : In the congressional elections , the Republicans take over the majority of the seats in the House of Representatives from the Democrats with large gains . In the Senate election , despite losses, there is a narrow majority for the Democrats. There are also gubernatorial elections in 37 states .

- Barcelona / Spain : Pope Benedict XVI. consecrates the altar of the Sagrada Família basilica by architect Antoni Gaudí, which has been under construction since 1882 .
- Conakry / Guinea : In the runoff election for the presidency , Alpha Condé won 52.52 percent of the vote, while its challenger Cellou Dalein Diallo achieved 47.48 percent.
- Moroni / Comoros : The presidential elections reach ikililou dhoinine 28.19 percent and Mohamed Said Fazul 22.94 percent of the vote. Ikililou Dhoinine, Mohamed Said Fazul and Bianrifi Tarmidhi will face a runoff election on December 26th.
- Naypyidaw / Myanmar : First parliamentary election in 20 years under severe restrictions from the military junta . The NLD party of the later Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi , victorious in 1990 and banned by the junta, calls for a boycott of the elections.

- Karbala / Iraq : A bomb attack kills at least 48 people and injures more than 38 others.
- Vienna / Austria : Kirsten Dene and Martin Wuttke are awarded the Nestroy Theater Prize for Best Actors . The Latvian Alvis Hermanis will be the best director , and Paulus Manker will be honored with the audience award.

- Moscow / Russia : The Duma passes a law to return objects and real estate to the Russian Orthodox Church that were expropriated during the October Revolution of 1917. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin took the initiative for the law in January.

- Dublin / Ireland : Prime Minister Brian Cowen announces that the country will receive financial assistance from the European Union (EU) because of the banking crisis and holds out the prospect of new elections. The EU pushed for restructuring measures to keep the external value of the euro stable amid increasing speculation against the currency.
- Phnom Penh / Cambodia : According to government figures, around 378 people die in a mass panic during the annual water festival .
- Vienna / Austria : At a summit meeting between the government and the Rectors 'Conference , it was agreed to increase the universities' budget by 300 million euros a year from 2013. Science Minister Beatrix Karl also wants to promote private sponsorship and economic cooperation.

- Washington, DC / United States : The Internet platform WikiLeaks makes a collection of over 250,000 diplomatic cables from US embassies publicly available .
- Yamoussoukro / Ivory Coast : The runoff election for the presidency takes place. In the next few days, the electoral commission declared Alassane Ouattara the winner with 54.10 percent of the vote, ahead of his challenger Laurent Gbagbo with 45.90 percent, while the Constitutional Council saw Gbagbo with 51.45 percent ahead of Ouattara with 48.55 percent. A government crisis that lasted for months ensued .
