Toponymy
The place is first mentioned in 1155 as Ecclesia de Saonay . The ending -ay suggests Gallo-Roman settlement, a little later the place with Saornaco is actually mentioned, i.e. as a property of Saornus . Ultimately, the current place name Sornay arose from this .
history
A short stretch of the Roman road Louhans – Tournus probably passed east of Sornay. Allegedly there was a castle at the place where the Mairie stands today. Sornay belonged to the lords of Sainte-Croix , who in 1387 had a fair in October, on the day of Saint-Germain, called without the permission of the Duke of Burgundy . The Lords of Cuisery and Chalon wanted to prevent this, which the Duke of Burgundy protected and forbade the fair. In the 18th century the village belonged to the Perrigny family , the area of Grannod to the Gueret family and La Croix to the lords of la Marche . In 1856 there were several grain and oil mills as well as tanneries on the Seille. There were two community schools and two Protestant schools. The old church from the 12th century was moved to the new main street at the beginning of the 19th century, the choir was enlarged in 1846 and the roof was restored in 1861. As a result, the walls shifted due to a construction error, but the church continued to be maintained and repaired. Eventually it had to be canceled. At the end of the 1970s a new church was built around the old bell tower from 1834 and consecrated in October 1980. The boys 'school dates from 1903, the girls' school from 1912 and the post office from 1913. Around 6 kilometers of towpaths have been repaired along the southern bank of the Seille . In 1988 there were 119 farms in the municipality. In 1973 Sornay - along with Branges - was merged with Louhans, but in 1979 the merger was reversed.
