First performance level - 1st Bundesliga

mode

The championship in the 1st Bundesliga was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. The Viennese Rapid could become Austrian soccer champions for the 30th time . The championship title was fixed in the last round by a 2-0 victory over the second Sturm Graz. As a champion you took part in the qualification for the Champions League 1996/97 , completed it successfully. Vice-champion Sturm was allowed to take part in the 1997 European Cup , where the team failed in round 1, thanks to the cup victory. Tirol and GAK represented Austrian football in the 1997 UEFA Cup ; Tirol reached the first round through the qualification, GAK reached the sixteenth finals. Austria, LASK and Ried started in the UI Cup in 1996 . The last placed in the championship had to relegate with the SK Vorwärts Steyr. The place in the 1st Bundesliga was replaced by the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga, FC Linz, in the following season. In addition, a relegation was held between the penultimate of the 1st Bundesliga and the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga. Here the FC Admira / Wacker prevailed and thus retained the 1st Bundesliga.
