The championship in the 1st Bundesliga was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. Vice-champion Sturm was allowed to take part in the 1997 European Cup , where the team failed in round 1, thanks to the cup victory. Austria, LASK and Ried started in the UI Cup in 1996 . The last placed in the championship had to relegate with the SK Vorwärts Steyr. The place in the 1st Bundesliga was replaced by the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga, FC Linz, in the following season. In addition, a relegation was held between the penultimate of the 1st Bundesliga and the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga. Here the FC Admira / Wacker prevailed and thus retained the 1st Bundesliga.
