Hannover 96 achieved immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga. Karlsruher SC was last first class in the 1984/85 season .

Newcomer FSV Salmrohr had to leave the league immediately. In addition, Kassel, Aschaffenburg and the former German champions Braunschweig were relegated to the league. Eintracht thus became the only club in German professional football to be relegated with a positive goal difference (52:47).
