Benton County was formed on December 21, 1837 from parts of Dubuque County. It was named after Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858), who represented the neighboring state of Missouri in the US Senate .
In the spring of 1846 an administrative seat was set up, which was named Northport. A little later, the city was renamed Fremont after General John C. Frémont . Since there was already a place with the same name in Iowa, another name was changed. The still official name of the administrative headquarters is Vinton , named after the representative Plynn Vinton from Ohio , who paid 50 dollars for it.
In 1856 the foundation stone was laid for the first continuously used courthouse. The current courthouse was built between 1905 and 1906.
